Stare in the Monster Maker (Day 3)

(Edit: Not sure what happened with the video.  I do like Crowley from ‘Supernatural’, but I meant to use another video with this song.  Specifically the one from the designated YouTube Channel.  So if you want to catch a clearer version look for ‘When You’re Evil by Voltaire’.  Really strange.)

These creatures have been ‘donated’ by Melissa Barker-Simpson:

Druidate

A high-altitude owl that calls the Velrojik Mountain Range, its body is the size of a pumpkin.  It is a very apt description considering they have an orange coloration and puff their feathers out when threatened.  The wingspan is three times the size of their body and there are sticky nets that it uses to catch prey out of the sky. A Druidate sheds these webs ever month, but they don’t let them fall to the ground.  Males devour their webbing for the extra protein, which improves their fertility.  Having a bigger appetite and more efficient metabolism, the females use their webs to create nests within the mountain crevices.  The only danger from these creatures is that their shrieks can scramble airplane equipment and increase the likelihood of a crash.

Enlacopeadia

This is a science-created animal that is used by various scientists and a few rich adventurers who don’t realize what they were made for.  The Enlacopeadia resembles a three foot long millipede with a spiral of crystals going from its head to its tail.  When ‘born’, the stones are clear and turn dark green as the animal absorbs knowledge.  It can understand any language and acts as a scientist’s recording device.  Playback involves the Enlacopeadia attaching itself to the nervous system of its owner, which is a painless procedure.  Some even say it tickles due to the many legs.  Once all of the crystals have been filled with knowledge, they can be removed and fresh ones installed.  This does require that the owner take time to get the animal reacquainted with the world, so it is recommended that you go to a professional who will leave the first crystal in place.  This is a mistake that many rich adventurers make as well as using them solely as a translator, which reduces their lifespan by half.

The next set have been ‘donated’ by Lily Eva Blake:

Neberklom

Nocturnal and indigenous to a single valley on the western side of Bixtyl, the Neberklom is a dangerous serpent.  Not having any fangs or poison, it is a constrictor that can grow as long as twenty feet.  The skin and muscles of this animal are more flexible than that of other snakes, which allows it to swallow very large meals.  This includes animals with horns and antlers even though such things can puncture the Neberklom’s innards.  It survives this meal because it has two stomachs that are side-by-side.  One takes on food that holds no danger for the creature and digests normally.  The other has very potent acid that can break down the horns and antlers before they cause damage.  Another tactic is to swallow the beast from the back end and hold on as part of it digests.  This allows the Neberklom to work up to the antlers, which are crunched by its hard palate. A final tactic of this deadly predator is that it can imitate the sounds of whatever it last ate, which includes human speech.

Zulahem

Found in multiple habitats, this monkey resembles a gibbon with long arms and eating habits.  Their calls range from hoots to chattering laughter, which echoes throughout their territory.  Matted fur of either red or grey covers their skin, the cold-resistant pelt a favorite of local tribes that share northern territories with the Zulahem.  The difference between this animal and a gibbon are barbed patches on the elbows and knees.  These help them cling to surfaces during storms and dangle from various perches.  When threatened, a Zulahem will attack with these areas and deliver a toxin it absorbs from various plants in the area.  Every species of Zulahem has a different toxin because of the unique habitat and flora.

Eezabum

Named because somebody overheard a slurred explanation of the animal, the Eezabum is a type of sloth.  This one lives in caves and suffers from severe light sensitivity.  It has bulging eyes that rarely open and long-clawed hands that it uses to climb around the solid ceiling.  Since it is too slow to catch prey, it hangs upside down with its mouth open and emits a sweet smell.  This attracts butterflies and some species of moth, which gather in its throat.  Even though the Eezabum can eat the insects, its real prey are bats that will fly in to get at the bugs.  There has only been one situation that has found this creature to move quickly, which is when there are no stars or moon.  Total darkness outside the cave draws the Eezabums out to mate on the ground in a hurry.  Those that get caught in the light may become confused and wander away from their home.

  1. It is always amazing how you create these details. I loved the description of the Eezabum habit of mating in a hurry. Sounds like some people I know.

They’e all pretty awesome. The Neberklom has a wonderful digestive process. But I have to say the Enlacopeadia would be very handy to have around. 🙂

  4. Awesome. You have a wonderful imagination, and you rock at this ‘game’ – My favourite is the Enlacopeadia, and I can’t decide if it’s totally cool or a little creepy (no pun intended) or both!
