So last night was the TWUBS chat. It started well, went haywire at one point, and I managed to pull it back. Definitely a learning experience on what I should and should not do with these things. The question is what next. Three ideas:
- Monthly ‘chat with characters’ at a midday time or maybe a weekday at night. Either a 12-3 PM for midday or an 8-11 PM night. All Eastern Standard Time. The midday idea is for my non-USA friends.
- Monthly ‘chat with author’ at the end of the month. Same timing thing depending on the day of the week.
- Combine the two and switch their times every month. So midday character/night author in April then midday author/night characters in May.
That was the big event of the week. I did a lot of writing, but not as much as I’d hoped. I have 3 chapters to go and I was hoping to finish by Tuesday night. Looking more like Wednesday morning. After that, I’m going to tackle the Book 11 outline while the changes are fresh in my mind. Book 10 is certainly turning into something I didn’t entirely expect and I’ve cut a lot of the fat on this one. There’s more that went off-script here, but that’s spoiler territory. Plus side is that I’ll finish writing before my son’s Spring Break.
As far as Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue goes, the editing is moving along and so is the cover art. My hope is to release the book on April 3rd, but I’m open to the following week. Not sure if Passover would be a good or bad thing. Remember that this isn’t set in stone because something can always go wrong. I’d rather delay the release than make a mistake.
This week feels like a blur of exhaustion, funky weather, and I think my son had off on Friday. Preparing him for getting a full-sized bed in the future. There was proof that breaks from school mean I’ll be a rarity and might not do more than editing whenever he plays. Writing short stories at night would happen.
So, what are the goals for the weeks?
- Finish writing the first draft of Tribe of the Snow Tiger.
- Celebrate with pizza reward.
- Start doing outline for Book 11. Total rewrite. Maybe the first 2 chapters are salvageable. New enemies, new allies, and new everything for the rest.
- Choose a new book to read. Think I need something funny and lighthearted.
- Biking and stop obsessing about my weight. That seems to make it worse.
- Review more of the ‘Ichabod Brooks and the City of Beasts’ idea. Aiming to write first draft in April.

It was a good turnout. Just lost control at one point and it moved away from me and the books (the main reason) to pipe dreams that got rather ridiculous at times.

The series does seem easy to visualize as a movie, so maybe it would help your readers to imagine certain actors and actresses playing their parts as they read your next volume…? (Even though that probably strayed too long and far from the direction you wanted the discussion to head.)

That was kind of what I was curious about when I asked the question. I’ve been told many times that my books read like shows and movies. As you said, it strayed too far and went too long. The people that were there for the books and chatting with the author left because it seemed to take over. Lesson learned for next time.

Sounds like you are doing well with everything, all things considered. One upside to being our own boss is that when things go wrong, we can just go with the flow (at least, I think that’s an upside). I think I’d rather push back a release or other event and have it done well/right rather than force a deadline and have the work be less than perfect. It’s a fine line to walk, though. Good luck with everything!

It’s an upside. Though I do wish to get a little rest before the Spring Break/Passover/Easter period. If anything, I need a day to rest and bum around.

Feels like it was only yesterday. Though one reason is that a bigger bed will squeak less than the current one. Kid still bangs his head against the mattress when he sleeps.
