I’ve mentioned a few of the role-playing games I was into in college, which is mostly Dungeons & Dragons. There was some Vampire, Heroes Unlimited, and a bunch of strange one-shot tries. One of those attempts was another White Wolf system called Mage: The Ascension. It was connected to Vampire and you played a mage who had to hide his uses of magic because normal people weren’t supposed to know it existed. Not easy for someone used to worlds where fireball flinging was a hobby. I started in this system alongside my friend Dave aka Nimby and he fell in love with the system. I went back to being Clyde the vampire when I was given the opportunity. Probably because our characters were insanely overpowered.
I played Tiber who was a mind magic using martial artist from the Akashic Brotherhood. He was looking for his kidnapped girlfriend and made an oath that he would not utter a word until she was saved. This was a problem from the beginning, so we altered it to allow for telepathy only. Even then it was sparingly. Dave played Gage who was a Son of Ether, which meant a mage who played with various gizmos. Together we set off to do something that neither of us understood or can really remember. Then the characters kind of fell into obscurity until now. For some reason, Tiber popped into my head during my time wrangling the son.
So, I’m looking at putting these two into the Project Phoenix (might need to change that name) series where each book is a different hero who is connected to the Mylrixians. I’m keeping the hunt for Tiber’s girlfriend and his oath. Only now she’s his wife and Gage is going to be his brother-in-law/best friend. It’ll be a challenge to work with a ‘mute’ character since I’m having it that Tiber only ‘speaks’ to Gage. I’m also going to switch up their races from human to a Calico (Tiber) and a gnome (Gage). This should be an interesting adventure to write up with more comedy than drama.
Then again, I’m not sure how long of a story I can push such a quest. I’m already working on turning the idea of cursed lovers hunting for each other when they can’t see, hear, or sense each other. I don’t know if putting in a villain from the boys’ past would be enough to change some things up. There is the whole thing with the returning heroes and villains of Project Phoenix not always getting their roles right, so I can play around with something there. Possibly have the end of their ‘quest’ only be the midpoint where something else drives them on.
Maybe adding it to the chaos of Project Phoenix is causing some trouble. I really need to sit down (AGAIN!) to jot down all the characters in that one and then find a poor victim to help me hash the whole thing out. I’m wandering off-topic from Tiber and Gage. I do think they would work best in Project Phoenix since a stand-alone of them seems oddly out of place. That and they’ll have some strange powers that puts them in the Mylrixian category.

This is like sneaking into a laboratory and watching while the scientist puts together a formula for creating life. Thanks for the glimpse. urrr urrr urr. Igore you impetious boy.

Ah Mage the Ascension! I still have all the books from that game sitting on my shelf. Cost me probably over $500.00 to buy them all but there was rarely a day in college I didn’t have one of those books in my satchel as I went to class or was at lunch, reading as I ate. I’m not really sure what happened to Gage, I remember leaving the ST’s group and forming my own ill fated game. But I still am happy that I learned the system. Thanks for bringing back some good memories buddy 🙂

Not sure. Think we all left that group around the same time. Gage kind of wandered into a portal and went off into the sunset though. Tiber did the same thing if I remember. Still, they lasted longer than Shockwave and Phasm from the Marvel game.
