Ask-A-Character: Stephen the Remorseless Monster

Greed from Fullmetal Alchemist

Greed from Fullmetal Alchemist

By now some people have started reading Legends of Windemere: The Compass Key.  Others might remember the sneak peek of Stephen from about two weeks ago.  He is easily the most evil, irredeemable character I have written.  He has no remorse and rather enjoys the pain that he inflicts.  This makes him a difficult character to write, but I’ve come to realize he’s necessary for the heroes to grow.  One can figure out how to handle a villain with some redeeming qualities, but it’s something else entirely to deal with someone who is pure evil.

Stephen is the son of Baron Kernaghan and acts as his top agent even though he operates on his own agenda.  He makes it clear that he’d happily kill his father to rule the world, especially when being told why he’d be a terrible leader.  Like the Baron, Stephen uses fear to control people.   The big difference is that he doesn’t try to balance it with compassion toward those that could assist him.  Everyone is disposable, which is why he is interested in making Nyx his property.  The core of his powers are time-based and allow him to regenerate, teleport, and do many other tricks.  Beyond this, Stephen is very strong and has had centuries of training in combat.

So ask him a question.  Though I don’t make any promises that he’ll be kind, polite, or any less disturbing than he typically is.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

What are the qualities that make a good leader? Why do you think you ‘d make a better leader than the baron?

    • Because the old man is weak. He shows compassion and kindness to those who he should be ruling by fear. People don’t fight me because they know I will make them suffer before death. Brutality, confidence, and understanding that those beneath you are to be used for your own progress is how a leader stays in power. Nobody will ever think such a ruler can be toppled. It helps to prove that by reminding others what happens if you are crossed.

  2. Once you’re the ruler of the world … what next? What will ultimately make you happy?

    • What else is there? Once I rule the world, which is an odd phrase in itself, then I’ll be reveling in doing whatever I want. I’m sure I’ll have my hands full with heroes and uprisings, which will keep my skills sharp. There are so many things to do and people to kill in this world that I don’t think I’ll ever get bored.

Not really sure what you mean with that second question. I’m usually happy. Tormenting and eliminating lesser beings is highly entertaining.
