Brief History of the Callindors

Black Family Tree from Harry Potter

Black Family Tree from Harry Potter

Ever since the first book of Legends of Windemere, the Callindor name has been mentioned as legendary.  Unfortunately, readers have only had Luke to go by on the prowess of the family, which isn’t the greatest advertisement.  So, this is going to be a little history lesson of this heroic bloodline.

The ‘first’ of the heroic line was Gavin Callindor, an elf who was chosen by the gods to defeat an evil warlord.  He journeyed with other heroes and rumor has it he was close friends with Gabriel prior to the latter ascending to be the new God of Destiny.  Gavin was the only hero to survive the final battle after the warlord gained the power of a god and threatened everything. The reward for destroying the warlord was fame and the blessing of the gods for his descendents.

Many monsters and enemies of the gods fell to the Callindors.  The only period where the name fell into the shadows was for a century after the Great Cataclysm.  Windemere had physically changed within minutes, causing many towns and species to be destroyed in the shifting Earth.  At the time, the Callindor family was composed of 70 members. Nobody knew where the family had gone and there were no stories of any of them until a young man arrived out of the Cerascent Islands with the surname.  His story was that the family manor had fallen into a chasm, half of the family dying in the tragedy.  Others died trying to stop areas from falling into chaos, but there were a few who were hiding to take stock of the situation.  It took many casters a year to prove he was a surviving Callindor.  Once everything was sorted out, the famous family was back.

Over the years, many other Callindors have risen to fame and enhanced the family reputation. Most of them have been elf, half-elf, and human after the various forks in the family line.  There have also been some who failed miserably to remind people that they’re still mortal.  Some of the noted ones:

Marsis Callindor– A towering warrior who was chosen to defeat the invading Ursines, who were unleashed by an insane caster.  He succeeded and lived out the last of his days helping the surviving beasts acclimate to an island.

Haylee Callindor–  This mousy woman was not a warrior, but an alchemist.  She cured many diseases with her knowledge.  Her final gift to the world was the mixture for a cure all potion that takes a decade to brew one dose.  Many temples keep a draft of this potion on hand in case of emergencies.

Lovo Callindor–  Destined to face a Named One, this member of the family is not looked at very fondly.  He fought the demon with very little preparation and no magical gear.  He died during the battle and half a village burned down.

Alversys Callindor– For years, he was the black sheep of his generation and became a bandit.  People believed he would be one of the few failures of the family until the Callindors were attacked and captured by several strong enemies.  Alversys was the only one left free and he set out to free the others.  He survived the great battle, but lost his arms.  Retiring, he returned to the family estate and founded the village of Haven.

Today, there are only a handful of Callindors left and Luke is the only one of his generation.  Most of his father’s generation have either died in battle or refused to have children.  So, Luke could very well be the last of the Callindors if he dies during his adventures.  Something he has yet to think about.
