Ask a Character: Zaria the Goddess of Purity

I’m rather surprised I haven’t put Zaria into the hotseat.  She’s rather low key even though she’s a major player in Windemere.  Besides being the Goddess of Purity, Zaria is a rival of Gabriel the Destiny God.  They hate each other, so it’s awkward for them to work together in Legends of Windemere.  Neither of them would be upset if the other was sealed or killed, but they have to depend on each other to succeed.

Zaria is the one who sets Luke Callindor on her path and has appeared to him many times, which risks breaking the Law of Influence.  So, there is certainly something driving her to take such actions and work with someone she hates.  Unknown to most mortals, Zaria was once a mortal and was born to save the gods from their own arrogance.  At the time, she was a warrior.  She is one of the gods who created the Law of Influence to prevent such a disaster from happening again.

So, feel free to ask this redheaded Goddess a question.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

the mythos is interesting… just one question why would purity and destiny be so opposed to one another…???

    • It isn’t about what we’re the gods of. It’s that Gabriel uses methods that I don’t approve of and looks at mortals as resources. He’s simply not a trustworthy person.

One thing to understand is that many of the Windemere gods were once mortal. So, we still possess our original personalities, morality, and memories. Another example that would confuse people is that the God of Necromancy is a friend of mine. While what he does goes against my area, I have no personal problem with him. Gabriel meanwhile is a pompous jerk with an ever-growing ego.

  2. How does a mortal become a god in Windemere?

    • There are various stories. Typically, the mortal is chosen to replace a fallen god or take up a new position after proving themselves worthy. Many times, the gods have been in danger from their own actions and mortals have had to rescue them. This is why the Law of Influence exists. If we no longer take a strong hand with mortals then we have less chance of being targeted.

For myself, I was a secret goddess born as a mortal when the second God of Destiny foresaw a need for me. A mortal woman found a way to control the gods and corrupt them, so I had to defeat her. In regards to Gabriel, he found the Ring of Destiny and its power turned him into a god. I don’t think we’ve had a new Ascended in centuries, but there are still some vacant seats within our pantheon.

  3. What do you do in your free time, when you’re not busy almost breaking the Law of Influence?

    • I play music, watch my favored chosen, visit some of the unspoiled areas of Windemere, and many other things. I admit that having eternity means you run out of hobbies after a while. I’m not like those gods that are content to lounge around Ambervale. I do try to find ways to help my followers without breaking the law. We’re allowed to give vague dreams and I have a little leeway in that I can visit those who call to me on their deathbed for comfort.
