Yom Kippur Haiku

I started my fast

The only one in the house

Someone made popcorn

(Tomorrow is going to utterly suck!)

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

I’m not Jewish although I married a Jewish woman and agreed that our kids would be raised in the faith. I’ve been told I look more Jewish than the rest of my family. I make the challah for bar and bat mitzvahs and for Friday evening services. Which is all a long way to say this … the people who made the popcorn need to seriously reconsider something. What that something is I’m not willing to say at the moment, but I respect that you take the fasting seriously.

I’m confused. Why do you have to fast?

    • Simple answer: Because I’m Jewish.

Full answer: Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. We fast for a full day (sundown to sundown) to repent for the sins we committed over the year. It’s to help us focus and rethink our previous actions in order to improve for the following year. Basically, don’t eat, pray, and think about the screw ups you’ve done. Or zone out on Legend of Zelda like I’m going to do.

    POPCORN.

I wish you the best of luck with that, knowing there is popcorn involved.

Oooo, that was mean! Have as good a fast as you can…so much more meritorious under the whiff of popcorn.
