Rant: I’m Not Superman

Heck, I’m not even Jarvis and I’m talking human butler Jarvis of the Avengers.  Not cyber-Jarvis voiced by Paul Bethanny in the Iron Man movies.

This week was supposed to be a week of progress.  My parents were out and I had the house to myself until 3:30 when my son comes home.  Sure, my wife is home on Tuesdays and Fridays, but she can entertain herself.  I could get through the first 3 chapters of ‘The Compass Key’ and have time left over to read and outline.

What in the name of Isaac Asimov went wrong?

I know the scenes I’ve been writing have been rather emotional, so they were rough.  I didn’t think it was delaying me that much.  There were the swarm of phone calls by robotic voices, my son being home sick today, my wife forgetting a lot of her errands, me having to cook dinner, food shopping, and the ever-present WordPress reader.

Let me reiterate something to the universe that seems to take great lengths to punish me for something in a past life.  What in the world I did is still a mystery.  At this rate, I must have been the thing that killed the dinosaurs. Digressing!

This write thing, universe, is my job.  Hear that?  MY JOB!  I’m not putzing around here playing on the internet.  I’m busting my butt keeping my name out there and trying to find ways to keep my book’s momentum going until the sequel.  I don’t plan on going back to retail, the food industry, or office work.  I played that game and found that I don’t operate like that.  If I have to go back there, I’m calling game over and making sure I dole out the misery that certain people have been chucking my way since I set out on this.

All that being said, I’m fed up dealing with this unexpected delay crap, universe.  Get your act together and start punishing people that actually deserve it.  After all, we’re going to come face-to-face at some point and I don’t think you want to deal with me when I’m angry.  So, start behaving and cutting me some slack.

Now, off to watch the sick child playing in the backyard (suffering like he’s at Club Med) while my wife finishes her chores.  Then, I’m hitting ‘The Compass Key’ and I’m not stopping until I have to make the Chicken Satay Burgers.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

Hang in there bud. I’m amazed at how much you accomplish during the day. In the time it takes me to publish one post, you’ve posted several, plus a dozen or so re-blogs and then when I go to comment on someone else’s post, look who has already commented: you! Today I was reading a post and they were referring to an interview with…you! You’re everywhere, dude! And on top of all that, you’re posting “sneak peaks” and working on your current project and whew! Okay, I’m exhausted just listing it all. You say you’re not Superman but I’m pretty sure you possess supernatural powers or maybe you’ve been cloned and are just not aware of it yet.

    • Thanks. I just get frustrated when I don’t reach my goals. A lot of the blogging is simple. I schedule some posts and the sneak peeks are taken out of the completed books. One thing I have to start doing is limiting my time on the reader.

I do have a friend that claims I have superhuman tenacity and endurance, but it came along with the impatience of a toddler.

  2. I know you have a number of pressures that demand productivity but you also need a fresh mind when writing. I think you ought to give your self a time out. Not for not writing but for smacking yourself for not writing. While you are in time out you might take time out. It is none of my business but I’m just saying.

    • I tried taking a time out on Wednesday actually. Made it through a little writing, but at a leisurely pace. The goal I set was smaller than my usual ones, which is why I’m frustrated. I had to stay up until midnight every day this week to finish things that typically would take me a few hours to do.

      • (Fresh Mind) I am playing Brick on the TV show “The Middle.” where he says words down his shirt thinking no one can hear them. When I see my pace slacken it is usually cause I am tired. Not sleep tired but subject tired. It is frustrating.

      • Makes sense. I’m probably looking at today being a dud unless I get a bunch of writing done after the toddler goes to sleep. I have the scene in my head too, so it shouldn’t take too long.

First off, I love rants. Secondly I’m sorry little man is sick. Third, I wanna send your book out to a couple of connections, may I have your permission to do so. Was I on fourth or D? Whatever, anyway you were Jack the Ripper in your past life which explains why I love you. The dinosaurs were John Howell’s fault, he was there.

Lastly I forgot what the point in my comment was. Oh well.

  7. Maybe there was something about this last week…maybe the stars weren’t aligning or something…but I know just how you feel even though our circumstances are different (mine was more about having the literal work week from hell and that is a long boring story I’m not going to subject anyone else to!! 🙂 )…it’s all about being dedicated to getting something achieved, often against major odds.

But remember, we all believe in you Charles! Keep the inspirational fire burning – and say like I’m saying at the end of this past week…’this too shall pass’… 🙂

So sorry about your rough week! But I think that’s one of the reasons you’re such an inspiration to the rest of us…you always push through. Thank you for that.

    • Some days are easier than others. I’m still hoping to finish a chapter section tonight and take advantage of bad weather to write the last one tomorrow.

If I’m lucky, next week I’ll get to write a scene that I’ve been wanting to write since the year 2000.

You have my unnecessary permission to not read my posts all week. That should buy you a half hour or so. 🙂
