Shane asked me some questions in the week that I’m answering today. I should also apologize because I almost forgot with everything going on. Here we go:
- What is your favorite non-fiction book?
I thought about this long and hard until I realized that I really haven’t read non-fiction outside of textbooks. I never had an interest in buying somebody’s life-story when I could just research it at the library or the internet. I do have a lot of Tolkien ‘behind-the-scenes’ books, but those are still steeped in fiction. So, I really don’t have an answer for this question.
- What is your favorite fantasy novel?
First, I’m going to say favorite novel of all time is ‘Ender’s Game’ by Orson Scott Card, but that’s science-fiction. So, my favorite fantasy novel . . . people guess Narnia or Lord of the Rings so often for me. Yet, my answer goes back to the book series that started it all. By ‘it’, I mean my decision to be an author. Fred Saberhagen’s ‘Books of Lost Swords’ is what I read in high school that made me decided to follow the path I’m on now. I haven’t read the series in a while, but I will always consider it my favorite because it holds a special place in my heart. I suggest anyone who loves fantasy to give it a look.

We should make this asking you questions thing a weekly challenge, since you don’t have enough to do already lol.

lol! I asked these question on his birthday when he asked for questions to answer, otherwise I wouldn’t of bothered him with these.
But I do love finding stuff out about people, especially when it involves getting the chance to find out what books have such a lasting impact on them, that is truly exciting for me and it is also a chance for me to discover new books to read.

And Charles is just interesting anyway. Besides I like making him feel like a lab rat under a scope. It distracts him from his cheerio cleaning.

Why do I have a feeling that people are plotting against me right under my nose? 😛

I have to shudder with the lab rat remark. My sister is a biochemist whose specialty is designing mice. Very mad scientist-y and she’s known as the Mouse Queen. Though I think the mice consider her the Great Destroyer.

Lol. See it was appropriate. If you disappear we will all know why.

She’s already refused my demand for spider-powers. She’s a geneticist, so I don’t see why she can’t do it. Morality doesn’t factor in when experimenting on siblings.

I’m always up for that challenge. That question page is always open. 🙂

Cool because as usual I’ve a question. When you first began thinking up legends, did you anticipate it being a series or a single book?

I’ll answer it here briefly, but I think I might make my typical ‘thought’ post on Wednesday about how to work or plan a series.
Legends of Windemere was always going to be a series because I knew from the start that the adventure couldn’t be contained in one book. Being based off a game, I knew more was to come and Luke would be going through a lot of growth. The thing I didn’t know was how long a series. It was 10 at first then 12. Eventually, it hit it’s limit at 15 when I found a few big stories that I let fall by the wayside. I tend to gravitate toward series because of my love of character development too.

Sometimes I almost hate standalone single books. When I really love the characters I want to know more about their continued existence after the initial meet and greet of the first book.
Series make me feel at home.

I think the concept of a series is really ingrained in the fantasy genre. I’m having trouble thinking of a standalone fantasy book and the closest that I can think of is ‘The Hobbit’.

Thanks for answering these questions of mine Charles!
I remember you mentioning Books of Lost Swords to me, I will definitely be getting these!
I will also be getting “Ender’s Game”, I can’t wait to start my journey with these books.
And I understand about the Non-Fiction thing, Not many people I come across like The biographies and memoirs and History stuff that I do, I am always the only one over in the Non-Fiction section in every store I find myself browsing in haha!
Thanks again for answering these!

Another good fantasy series is Ranger’s Apprentice. I still have to finish the series, but it’s got amazing characters and adventures.
