Answered Questions 2

Shane asked me some questions in the week that I’m answering today.  I should also apologize because I almost forgot with everything going on.  Here we go:

  • What is your favorite non-fiction book?

I thought about this long and hard until I realized that I really haven’t read non-fiction outside of textbooks.  I never had an interest in buying somebody’s life-story when I could just research it at the library or the internet.  I do have a lot of Tolkien ‘behind-the-scenes’ books, but those are still steeped in fiction.  So, I really don’t have an answer for this question.

  • What is your favorite fantasy novel?

First, I’m going to say favorite novel of all time is ‘Ender’s Game’ by Orson Scott Card, but that’s science-fiction.  So, my favorite fantasy novel . . . people guess Narnia or Lord of the Rings so often for me.  Yet, my answer goes back to the book series that started it all.  By ‘it’, I mean my decision to be an author.  Fred Saberhagen’s ‘Books of Lost Swords’ is what I read in high school that made me decided to follow the path I’m on now.  I haven’t read the series in a while, but I will always consider it my favorite because it holds a special place in my heart.  I suggest anyone who loves fantasy to give it a look.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

We should make this asking you questions thing a weekly challenge, since you don’t have enough to do already lol.

lol! I asked these question on his birthday when he asked for questions to answer, otherwise I wouldn’t of bothered him with these.

But I do love finding stuff out about people, especially when it involves getting the chance to find out what books have such a lasting impact on them, that is truly exciting for me and it is also a chance for me to discover new books to read.

Cool because as usual I’ve a question. When you first began thinking up legends, did you anticipate it being a series or a single book?

      • I’ll answer it here briefly, but I think I might make my typical ‘thought’ post on Wednesday about how to work or plan a series.

Legends of Windemere was always going to be a series because I knew from the start that the adventure couldn’t be contained in one book. Being based off a game, I knew more was to come and Luke would be going through a lot of growth. The thing I didn’t know was how long a series. It was 10 at first then 12. Eventually, it hit it’s limit at 15 when I found a few big stories that I let fall by the wayside. I tend to gravitate toward series because of my love of character development too.

Sometimes I almost hate standalone single books. When I really love the characters I want to know more about their continued existence after the initial meet and greet of the first book.

Series make me feel at home.

      • I think the concept of a series is really ingrained in the fantasy genre. I’m having trouble thinking of a standalone fantasy book and the closest that I can think of is ‘The Hobbit’.

Thanks for answering these questions of mine Charles!

I remember you mentioning Books of Lost Swords to me, I will definitely be getting these!

I will also be getting “Ender’s Game”, I can’t wait to start my journey with these books.

And I understand about the Non-Fiction thing, Not many people I come across like The biographies and memoirs and History stuff that I do, I am always the only one over in the Non-Fiction section in every store I find myself browsing in haha!

    Thanks again for answering these!
