This is kind of a combination of a questions and scenario post. Doesn’t even need much of an explanation.
You were born into a villain family and became a hero. Why do you think you would turn and what would you do to distance yourself from your lineage? This can be in any genre of your choice.
About Charles Yallowitz
Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

Guess it’s a tough scenario.

If this were a mystery/thriller series, I would be from a crime family and would go into law enforcement far from where they live. The why has to be based on a moral code within the world (a universal knowledge of right and wrong). It can’t just be “because it’s the right thing to do,” because that would involve yet another “why” question. My task would be to bring my family to justice. It would tear me up inside, because they are my family. If this were a fantasy, my family would be dark wizards bent on controlling others. They have enormous power. My ability is acceptable, but not exceptional. My family believes magic solves everything. Because of my underdog status, I went in for weapons training and discovered some that could aid my cause. In both scenarios, ally-building is critical.

Good point on ally-building. That always seems crucial. Not only for help in fighting, but to have people who vouch for your character.

I’m from a family who are grifters and thieves. I went away to school and became a lawyer. Now I’m running for Congress and the family is against it. My challenge will be to try and win the election and keep the family out of politics. So far none of the members have faced any charges but that could change any time.

Interesting how they would be against having a politician in the family. Too much attention?

A difficult one. Maybe I fell in love with the wrong person, maybe a rival gang, or someone of the ‘wrong’ religion (like in the Troubles in Northern Ireland) and they had my lover killed. Then I would have 2 choices for revenge. Go after them and kill them, one by one, but that’s still evil, or join the law enforcement, or even become a lawyer, in order to bring them to justice.

It’s interesting how these characters can still Gabe dark actions without being seen as evil. Revenge is fairly common with these types.

I always like a twist. Maybe I’ll become a hero to my family and remain evil. I’ll be the one they tell stories about.

Interesting twist. Though, wouldn’t you just be like the rest of the family instead of the white sheep/outcast?

That is true. Anything you do here also allows for some debate over the nature vs nurture concept and that might be fun.

True. This type of story pretty much depends on that argument.

In my minstrels of Skaythe series, all mages are conscripted into an evil organization at a young age. The heroes of the series are those who realized the evil and escaped from it. In the stories they move constantly and are always fearful of discovery. Yet they continue being generous whenever they can.

Undercover heroes makes for good tension.
