Happy Groundhog Day

Apparently, it’s also Marmot Day and Hedgehog Day.  Lots of rodents today.  Well, let’s hope the varmints give us good news.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

Punxatawny Phil looked very happy and contented today in his handler’s arms. Probably why he predicted six more weeks of winter!

We don’t have groundhogs in the UK, so don’t have Groundhog Day, but the ancient Celts had something very similar at the same time of year. It was called Imbolc.

They had a personification of winter, called the Cailliach. If it was sunny on the day of Imbolc, she could come out and collect more wood for her fires, so prolong winter as she could keep warm. But if it was cold, she would stay indoors and thus the goddess, Brigid, could come out and begin spring.

    Very similar to your groundhog.
