Apparently, it’s also Marmot Day and Hedgehog Day. Lots of rodents today. Well, let’s hope the varmints give us good news.

Punxatawny Phil looked very happy and contented today in his handler’s arms. Probably why he predicted six more weeks of winter!

Never thought of it that way, but Phil does have a great work schedule.

He gets pampered for most of the year. Works one day. Can of only think of a few creatures who do even less.

We don’t have groundhogs in the UK, so don’t have Groundhog Day, but the ancient Celts had something very similar at the same time of year. It was called Imbolc.
They had a personification of winter, called the Cailliach. If it was sunny on the day of Imbolc, she could come out and collect more wood for her fires, so prolong winter as she could keep warm. But if it was cold, she would stay indoors and thus the goddess, Brigid, could come out and begin spring.
Very similar to your groundhog.

I think Imbolc was the inspiration for Groundhog Day.

Very probably. Like Samhain is the inspiration for Halloween.

True. Halloween was basically made to compete with it and draw converts.
