How Did 2024 Treat You?

Frodo Meme

I’m really going to say that this has been the worst year of my life:

  • Barely any progress on writing since I still haven’t finished editing the Slumberlord books, which I expected to finish by now.
  • Events of January made certain aspects of my life more difficult and painful, especially with the stress it put on my son.
  • Work is always a challenge, but my personal life stress combined with that to make it even more of a slog.
  • All of the progress I made on my weight in 2023 has been undone, except for maybe 4 pounds staying off out of the 19 I lost.
  • As the year progressed, I found myself with less and less free time even during evenings and on weekends.  This would be due to having 3-5 weekly appointments, which doesn’t count the non-weekly ones that would show up at times.
  • Generally treated like dirt by several people who I can’t simply tell to ‘fuck off’ and walk away from.  To be fair, they sometimes treated me like shit, so the dirt days were the ‘good ones’.
  • Car repairs and needing a new laptop happened close enough to each other that I took a financial hit.
  • Third time with Covid in the spring, which messed up my stomach.  Get random shots of pain if I each spicy or hot temp foods even now.

There were some good things that I will admit to:

  • Took a trip up to Oswego with my son in April, which was fun.
  • Took a solo trip up to Oswego in August, which was relaxing.
  • Started playing Pokemon Go, which kept me active.
  • A late event (December 18th) was when I learned that I no longer have hypertension thanks to my CPAP machine and walking a lot.
  • Did some fun Lego sets . . . Trying not to think about how much they cost or how badly I want the X-Men Mansion.

Well, how did everyone else do with 2024?

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  2. This must have caused some angst to relive the year. Mine was good. At my age, if I’m still upright, it is a good year. I finally finished the last book in the Eternal Road series and plan to launch it in Late January. It was quite a surprise in that it took twice as long to write as any other book. Not sure I’m going to do another by year’s end, but we shall see. Wishing you a Happy New Year.

  3. I’m getting nowhere with getting a book ready to publish!

My sister came over from Australia and my plans for our trips and family visits worked out, except for train trials, not my fault. I have manged to visit all three new homes of my children who all live in different directions. After all the things that happened in the first years of this decade at last I have been on some journeys.

  4. 2024: The first half of the year was productive, and I finally managed to publish the first book in my Bad Boy Wizard series. The second half was like sliding down into a swamp, with slow sales and reviews thin on the ground – a lot of hard work for little reward. Writing books is great, but marketing sucks!

Sorry you had such a rubbish year. I hope 2025 is better.

  5. I did ok this year, but have many worries about the road ahead. I hope you continue to make space for your health and the things you enjoy.

It’s been a mixed year for me. My son was suffering badly from depression after an unexpected breakup in November 2023. He’s still not completely right, but is getting better slowly. He won’t get help, though.

I had a big birthday in March, which was very nice. Several celebrations, including a meal and night away with many friends, a meal out with my sister and family, and a fortnight in Brittany in May with daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren, as well as brother-in-law and his wife.

I was diagnosed with a serious heart problem at the end of May. I was very breathless and couldn’t walk more than a hundred yards. As soon as they found the problem, they kept me in after the test and fitted a pacemaker the next day.

I am grateful to the medics and also that I’m now back to normal.

My writing hasn’t been going too well. I managed to get the second part of my One Poem a Day books. This one covers from July to December. I sent off the fourth novella in my Wolves of Vimar prequels. I got back the blurb and the cover for it, but wasn’t happy with either, so I’m still waiting for them. I hope it won’t be too long before that one is published.

Book 4 of the Wolves of Vimar is undergoing a critique process, so that should be published next year. It’s called Immortal’s Death. I’m also writing book 3 of my historical series. It begins with the most famous battle in English history–the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

But getting down to writing I’ve found a chore this year.

But my 3 grandchildren are doing just fine, so that’s a positive.
