A curious holiday since I don’t believe anyone from the future has ever come to celebrate it. Still, it does make me thing about the use of time travel in stories. If it’s the core mechanic from the start then I’m fine with. My issue comes from series that throw time travel in to either solve the on-going problem or change the status quo in order to keep things going. After watching ‘Eureka’, I’m definitely reminded of the latter, which made the last two series a little rough at first. ‘Endgame’ is another one that used time travel to solve the issue, but I’m not here to list things that I feel used it badly.
Instead, I’d like to know who everyone’s favorite time traveler is. Here’s mine:

Prince of Persia
Specifically, the Prince from the games and not the movie. I always liked how the games utilized the concepts of rewinding, fast-forwarding, and freezing time. This brought a new dimension to the acrobatic side of the game. This gave you a few extra chances to try again if you mistimed a wall run into a jump towards a bar, which you swung around in order to catch a tree that you slid down until you backflipped onto a ledge . . . All while dang bats were trying to bite you. A fun challenge that the time manipulation worked with very well through all 3 games.
So, who is your favorite time traveler?
A close second is:

Philip J. Fry from Futurama

Doctor Who and Philip J. Fry 😁

Fry is a great one even if he travelled totally by engineered accident.

Yes indeed Doctor Who. I am of the generation who hid behind the sofa ( well I didn’t but my friend did ) as we watched the original black and white TV series. A Time Lord and a Tardis enabling humans in the 1960’s to travel through time without the need to invent time travel themselves.

Never saw that show or read that book. Then again, I don’t think I’m the target audience.

It’s one of those multi genre books that appeal to a wide audience. (Time travel, fantasy, history, adventure, comedy, romance, family saga, social comment etc etc.) I didn’t think I would like them but got hooked.

Not a huge time travel fan. It just opens up so many plot problems that start with “Why didn’t they just…” after it’s been introduced. Familiar with many, like Marty McFly, Hermione Grainger, the entire crew of the Enterprise.

Forgot that Hermione counts.

Ditto Darlene! Claire Randal Frasier! Outlander got me interested in time travel. You might sample the first book and see if you like it – lots of excitement and battles!

Thanks. Maybe I’ll give it a try.

You can watch the series (on Starz) but the books are great. The series does deviate from the books but the author, Diana Gabaldon, oversees what’s produced. There are nine books so far, so maybe watching the series would be quicker? Next year is the last in the series.

Agreed. As I mentioned, something for everyone in those books. xo

I haven’t read any time travel books or seen movies other than Back to the Future. I don’t think I’m in the target audience either.

I think it’s more of a plot device than a specific genre these days.

The cast of Star Trek from any era. They were always travelling through time. You’d think the universe was a big enough place to explore, but nooooooo . . .”

Did they do that in every show? I only know of Original, TNG, and DS9 doing it. Guess Enterprise could count given the finale. Oh, the new Trek movies were built on it too.
Yeah. Guess time travel is a staple of Star Trek at this point.

I can’t speak for Lower Decks or Picard, since I haven’t watched much of them yet. But yeah. Once you begin time traveling, apparently you just can’t stop.

Back to the Future is my favorite time travel movie series. Star Trek The Voyage Home would have to be a tie for second place in my favorite time travel movies. I liked the Philadelphia Experiment too. The old Twilight Zone series had some interesting time travel stories as well.

Never heard of the Philadelphia Experiment. That a movie or book?

There was a book in the late 70s by Bill Moore and Charles Berlitz that was kind of a govt conspiracy theory about a WW2 Navy experiment that attempted to cloak a ship from RADAR. The 1984 movie was based on that, but clearly fiction. There was a remake in 2012 that was a bit different but I preferred the older movie.

Everyone forgot HG Wells’ The Time Machine. It’s got to be one of, if not the first time travel books.

I think everyone went more modern. The story doesn’t get brought up that often these days.

Some excellent answers in the comments, but I’m surprised no one mentioned Bill S. Preston, Esquire, and Ted Theodore Logan 🙂

That was surprising.
