So, I was in a classroom and noticed a poster. I’d seen it before multiple times, but a new thought clicked in my head:
There are only 7 species of sea turtles?
I always thought there were more than that, but I only remembered a few. No, there are only 7 and nearly all of them are endangered. 3 are critical! Primarily due to what humans are doing such as fisheries, pollution, and overhunting. So, I thought I would post a picture of each one. I hope I got one of each since you can’t really tell if the Image Search was being honest or not.
If you want to read up on sea turtles then HERE is the World Wildlife Federation site.
Oh, here’s the NOAA Fisheries site that shows what you can do to help sea turtles.

I have a friend who goes down to the shore every spring to protect the turtle egg nests from poachers.

That’s really cool. I think we have programs like that around here. Though I’ll not sure. There are sea turtles in the surrounding ocean, but I don’t know of any nesting sites.

Having lived by the gulf for years I never realized there were only seven types of turtles. We saw Green Turtles, Kemp Ridley, and Loggerheads. Terrific post charles.

Thanks. I was shocked too. Apparently Long Island has 5 of the 7 species off our shores.

Thanks for sharing these wonderful images, and the very important information, Charles! Never thought there are only seven different species of them. xx Michael

Glad you enjoyed it and people learned some things. I know I was surprised. Kind of wondering what other animal types aren’t as varied as I thought.

If you spacifically focus on “sea” turtles there are only those seven. However, there are other species of turtle that wouldn’t be included because they aren’t sea turtles, which may be a contributing factor to your thinking there were more.

I was actually thinking specifically sea turtles. Since the ocean is so big, I thought there would be more variety. Yet, only 7 types across the globe.

It’s an experience. I’m only a TA though and my current workload is rough. Made even harder due to covid. So, I’m just going into survival mode these days.

I totally understand! Apologies that I hadn’t asked you about school in a while. Covid has changed so many things in school. Parent’s cannot come into classrooms. Preschoolers have to wear masks all the time, except when eating and outside. Understanding a three-year-old who is wearing a mask is a huge challenge. We’re not supposed to be close, but I hug kids anyway. That’s what they need. Hang in there, Charles.

Thanks. I work in a high school, so it’s a different type of mentality. Think we’ve also just gotten used to the masks and gotten used to speaking loudly. I don’t know anyone who was working in a Pre-K setting around here, so I don’t know if we had the no hugging rule.
