The Lich by Jason Pedersen
- If you had the choice of any occupation, what would you actually like to be?
.
I believe my undead existence prevents me from most jobs. Given that I am trying to help my master rule Windemere, I’d say an alternative is claiming a territory. For a necrocaster this means filling an area of wilderness with unique monsters that do your bidding.
.
- Do you have any hobbies that you would like to be able to spend more time on?
.
Collecting souls to forge a new ring, but that’s still work. Unlike the champions, I need to keep working. My goals are not met by reacting to others.
.
- What’s your favorite meal?
.
A heavily corrupted fireskin would be delicious.
.
- Do you play any musical instruments–if so, what? If you don’t, what would you like to play?
.
As a mortal, I knew how to play a dulcimer. That skill no longer has any appeal to me these days.
.
- Is there any one in particular that you wish you didn’t have to be around?
.
That arrogant, psychotic son of my master.
.
- Have you ever been strongly attracted to someone and it never developed?
.
Since I’m amused by the meal question, I will ignore this one. Never ask it again.
.
- Are you surprised about what you have become? Is this what you expected when you were a child?
.
I went from a mortal man to an undead necrocaster that works for the most powerful being on Windemere. In other words, I didn’t plan for this when I was a child. The truth is that my mortal life took an unexpected turn and I followed it to where I am now. I would not change a thing.
.
- What is your biggest fear?
.
I will say waking up with mushrooms growing out of my eye sockets. You can decide if I’m being honest or not.
.
- If you could change places with another person in Windemere, who would it be and why?
.
I think I’m done attempting that spell . . . possibly.
.
- What makes you happy?
.
Rainbows on a warm spring day. Who created these questions? I’m happiest when serving my master and bringing his victory closer to a reality. Killing a Paladin is rather entertaining too.
.
- What does teamwork mean to you?
.
Something that heroes do, which puts them in the same location. Sometimes it makes it easier to hit all of them with a spell. Other times it means I have multiple pests running in opposite directions with a plan.
.
- How would you define honor?
.
Remaining loyal to those you swore an oath to. If there are other followers then one must prove to be the most loyal and honorable. That way you won’t be the one to be eliminated when your master is enraged.
.
- What’s the best way to hunt monsters?
.
Use live bait, but don’t let them know they’re bait. Also pray that the Lich who made the monster isn’t nearby. Those creations take a long time to build or summon. You people don’t like it when we kill and eat your loved ones, but we only do that for food and parts. Much more honorable than doing it for revenge.
.
- What’s your first response when someone makes you really, really mad?
.
Pull their soul out through their eye sockets and feast on it while turning the body into a decaying marionette.
.
- What’s it like working for Charles?
.
That is not my master’s name.
About Charles Yallowitz
Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.
I like him. I think we could be friends.

“Pull their soul out through their eye sockets and feast on it while turning the body into a decaying marionette.” Charming fellow, isn’t he?

The truth is that he’d rant and start hurling spells with the grace of a one-legged hippo. He gets frustrated rather easily.

Trying to picture the Lich playing the dulcimer at some point. At least he has a sense of humor and is loyal to a degree.

I think people forget he was human at some point. His memories are a little fuzzy though, but he wasn’t always the Lich. His real origin is hinted at in a few books.

Yes, it’s nice to learn of his back story. I like a villain who has redeeming qualities.

Then I’m guessing you hate Stephen. 😛

I love how these interviews showcase the distinct personalities of each character. I’d like to say he’s entertaining, but the better word is intimidating! 😀

He can be entertaining too. Funny thing is that I never really saw the Lich as truly intimidating. Untrustworthy and conniving, but there are very few times he comes off as terrifyingly powerful.

He scared me! It was his demeanour I think, and maybe his arrogance. Whatever it is, he’s a great character 😀

He is fun to write. I did try for arrogance and a creepy demeanor, but scary didn’t seem to be appearing. Probably too close to him.
