Kira Grasdon By Kayla Matt
- If you had the choice of any occupation, what would you actually like to be?
.
As much fun as being a warrior and a trader is, I think I’d like to be in a job where my life isn’t in danger so often. Owning a small restaurant would be nice. I can’t cook very well, but I can run a business and act as hostess. A lot goes on behind the scenes, so it would be a lot of work. Biggest danger would be food poisoning, which is a welcome change from assassins and undead.
.
- Do you have any hobbies that you would like to be able to spend more time on?
.
I know there’s a stereotype about this kind of stuff, but I like collecting clothes. As a child, I hated the parties because I had no control over things. Once I got to choose my dresses and jewelry, it was a lot more fun. So many combinations that I could never be bored. Can I change my first answer to fashion adviser?
.
- What’s your favorite meal?
.
A dry wine, chocolate drizzled strawberries, scorpion meat sandwich with a finely aged cheese, and a spicy bean salad. Not necessarily in that order. Maybe I should go back to the restaurant idea since I can create an amazing menu.
.
- Do you play any musical instruments–if so, what? If you don’t, what would you like to play?
.
I learned the piano as a child. It didn’t stick and I’m more interested in dancing.
.
- Is there any one in particular that you wish you didn’t have to be around?
.
Stephen. I want him to die a slow and painful death. Twice.
.
- Have you ever been strongly attracted to someone and it never developed?
.
A few noblemen that I had puppy love attraction too. Nobody that caught my interest for longer than a week or two. I’ve been on the other end of that scenario too.
.
- Are you surprised about what you have become? Is this what you expected when you were a child?
.
Yes and no. I was raised to be one of the heads of the Grasdon Merchant Company and a member of the noble class. So that is what I expected even though I didn’t entirely agree with it. The surprise is that I’m learning how to be more of a warrior. There’s an excitement in the training and the few missions I do for my father’s business. I will admit that this is helping me learn to be a better leader.
.
- What is your biggest fear?
.
Losing my sense of self. I’ve put on so many masks to make those around me happy that I always fear forgetting who the real Kira is. It’s getting better as I combine the masks into one, but I’ll be fearful of being trapped as a false persona until there’s only one of me left.
.
- If you could change places with another person in Windemere, who would it be and why?
.
Fizzle. It means I can be near Luke, keep an eye on Sari, and not be targeted as a champion. The downside to that is I wouldn’t be able to spend time with Fizzle.
.
- What makes you happy?
.
Days where I don’t have to worry about business and I can relax. My favorite place is the Peacock Room, but I also enjoy spending time with the elephants. Those are nothing more than perks though. Having a moment where I can be me and not face any expectations is the true core of my happiness.
.
- What does teamwork mean to you?
.
Trusting someone to carry their weight and not leave teammates in the lurch. I would say compromise is another big part of working with others. Stubborn arguments are a quick way to shatter a group.
.
- How would you define honor?
.
Being honest and good. I think it’s more rare than people want to admit.
.
- What’s the best way to hunt monsters?
.
Hire experts to travel with you and pay them half up front. Listen to them when they give you orders.
.
- What’s your first response when someone makes you really, really mad?
.
Depends on the situation. In business, I would remain calm on the outside and try to make a deal that benefits me more. In high society, I’d cry and avoid showing my temper. In other situations, I’d yell, curse, and fight against whoever made me mad.
.
- What’s it like working for Charles?
.
Did my father sell me to somebody and not mention it? That doesn’t sound like him.
About Charles Yallowitz
Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.
I like this one. Lots of character coming through.

I read this on my email, but had to drop by to let you know how poignant #8 was. I really like Kira (and find her more grounded than #2 might imply), but her answer to #8 was just mind-blowing.

Kira does have some #2 instincts. She’s a character with a lot of masks and part of her evolution is combining them into one. Not a pretty journey though.

And yet, one that feels very personal to me 🙂

I had to laugh at this: “I think I’d like to be in a job where my life isn’t in danger so often. Owning a small restaurant would be nice. . . . Biggest danger would be food poisoning, which is a welcome change from assassins and undead.” So true!
Great interview!

She definitely has a point. Betting her life was easier before she met Luke. 🙂

It’s nice to see an heiress who is a warrior. I agree with Nicholas that number 8 is very poignant. Must be hard to maintain one’s status in high society and as a warrior.

I guess the plus side is she’s still more heiress than warrior. Being in Bor’daruk, she does get some leeway. It’s in Serab that things get shaky given her past behavior, which wasn’t very warrior-like. After all, the concept of a female warrior isn’t weird in Windemere thanks to characters like Selenia and Tzefira. Kira simply has to merge everything.

Fan Question: What do you do when you have to work alongside someone you really don’t like? How do you keep your cool?

Depends on the person. I don’t think I’d be able to stop myself from throwing a few insults if they’re pushing my buttons. For the most part, I’d get the work done and repeatedly remind myself to be the bigger person. After all, being the one who ruins everything for a grudge would make me look bad.

This is a sticky honey trap. I clicked your page randomly, having read a comment you left on Nicolas C. Rossis’s site. Then I read your interview and now am trapped. TRAPPED. How very, very bad of you to do this to innocent readers. Thank you.
