Book 7 of Legends of Windemere has been edited and headway is being made on Book 6: Curse of the Dark Wind. I’ve come to realize that being a few books ahead in writing/editing can cause confusion. I understand, but I inevitably get a question about when the books that sit between published and edited came out.
The next big project is editing Book 8, which is going to start over the weekend or next week. I didn’t realize my son has off next Wednesday and there’s Parent/Teacher meetings that day. The thing is that this book is short. I thought Curse of the Dark Wind was short at 282 since the others were at least in the 300 page range. Well, Book 8 clocks in at 255. This might rise a bit as I add some description and flesh a few things, but it has me wondering what happened. It doesn’t help that this is the book that lost its last 3 chapters to the hard drive crash. I might have rushed those rewrites or even been more focused. I do know it came in a few pages shorter after that, but I won’t know until I get that far. Still, it’s a little disconcerting to be working with 300-4oo page books and then it suddenly drops to 255.
Anyway, I have a day or two of no projects. Tomorrow will be resting and maybe I’ll tool around with a randomly picked idea while watching TV. Thursday is Thanksgiving and I’m cooking the meal. Friday is up in the air. Might be exhausted, stuffed, and meeting with friends. Avoiding stores is definitely the rule for the weekend. There’s always reading too.

Congrats, Charles! This is great news, as I know your writing journey has been a shared one for all of us writers. Again, looking forward to more good news from you!

I don’t think there’s necessarily anything wrong with the book being shorter. I mean, the Harry Potter series got shorter toward the end. It might even be a result of growing as a writer — the more you write, the better you get, and you’re able to express your ideas more succinctly now than you could back in book one. Just a theory 😀

I thought the last HP book was bigger, but my memory is fuzzy. Good theory there. I wonder if the introduction of characters being over cuts down on things too.

I was worried about Will ‘O the Wisp being a bit short. It’s a paranormal tale, and they aren’t usually one of the longer genres. I suppose it is as long as it needs to be. I believe that’s the important thing about any story.

True. That’s what I keep trying to tell myself. I think it’s just jarring and that hard drive issue has put a worm of worry in my head. It’ll probably be cleared once I do an editing run to see how it plays out. Then again, the story itself is a little zany since there are about 6 events being followed at once. It nearly falls into short story territory.

Congrats, Charles! Michelle might be on to something. At least, I don’t think it’s bad if one book is shorter than the other. If it doesn’t read like something is missing, then you’re probably okay. Have a great holiday!

I think it’s just jarring after everything. I’ll get a better idea about it after I do the edits. Just hope I can get a week’s worth of time to get it done without any gaps in focus. Holidays and cruddy weather are going to be a problem.

My hat is off to you! You work so hard! And you’re cooking the Thanksgiving meal? Wow!!!!
It makes sense though that some books in a series would be shorter. Terry Pratchett has books of varying lengths in the Discworld series.

Thanks. Happy Thanksgiving to you too. Spending the day trying to sort through the big headache future project. I found one of these books has 45 superpowered characters. That’s a potential of 45 short stories in there.

It appears you have almost enough material for a lifetime, but even you must rest once in a while. 🙂
