Author Comforts: Remember to Hydrate

Polar Seltzer

Polar Seltzer

I always forget to grab something to drink while I’m writing.  It wasn’t always this way, but I think it stems from me cutting caffeinated or sweet sodas out of my life.  Not completely since I indulge maybe 1-2 times a week.  Still there is rarely any Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, 7UP, or Sprite in the house.

Instead, I indulge in seltzer and I’ve hooked into Polar more than any other brand.  By indulge, I mean I treat these things like water bottles.  I toss one in the fridge at night, grab it about midmorning, toss another in, and chug away whenever I remember.  I tend to forget because I’m caught up in my writing.  Also the only place to put it while I work in my room is out of reach on the dresser.  I tried to floor once and kept knocking the bottle over, which lead to explosions.

Funny thing about seltzer is that a new bottle will explode even if you haven’t shaken it up, so always open carefully.

I have a list of favorite flavors, which changes when seasonal stuff shows up.  Currently, Champagne Strawberry is on the shelf.  Though I’m big into the Granny Smith Apple and Vanilla Pear flavors right now.  There’s an Irish Coffee and a Blackberry Bergamot that I have to try.  Should be interesting, but that’s my drinking vice.  I’ll be sucking them down a lot more often when it gets into winter and the room they’re stored in is cold enough to double as a fridge.

Anybody have a favorite trick that they have while writing or to celebrate a milestone?  I sense a lot of love for margaritas coming.  😉

One of these days I will have to try a margarita… never got round to it yet…

I have found a sweet, crisp, light and refreshing blush wine I enjoy late in the afternoons. It is a Barefoot wine. I have never enjoyed water. I start with coffee to perk up and wind down with wine. Sometimes, late in the evening I will have a margarita or a Crown and cola. Diet cokes are my daily go-to drink. I know I should drink more water, but I have never been able to get into the habit.

  3. I love me a nice steaming cup of pumpkin spice tea – two sugar, one milk – from Timmies. Nothing beats sugary pumpkin goodness after a long, hard day’s work 🙂

  4. I’m a Diet Pepsi addict but I’ve been trying to force myself to drink more water. It isn’t that I don’t like drinking water, I just really like diet pepsi – but I know it isn’t good for me. I always carry a big 20 oz Tervis water bottle full of water from home (we have well water which is way better than the city water I have at work). Speaking of Tervis, I love my Tervis glasses – they don’t sweat no matter what and they keep my drinks cold.

Oh, and if I could have margaritas or wine, that is always my first choice 🙂

    • Something I did with a thermos/water bottle/canteen in Florida was mixing purified water with ice and 3-4 teabags. It was nothing more than simple iced tea, but it helped with transitioning away from soda. The challenge I had with water is that it never had a real taste to me.

  5. I celebrate a good week with a margarita (how did you know). I also have water available all the time. I must drink a gallon a day. I use a Pur filter and keep a glass of ice water on my desk. I found selter caused me to blow up rather than the bottle.

  6. A traditional drink in Greece is sour cherry juice. It’s usually sold in concentrated form, and diluted with water. Having a bit of a sweet tooth, I go through a (concentrated) bottle a week 🙂

  9. But don’t hydrate so much that you have to run to the potty just when the writing really gets good. 🙂
