Nyx is a powerful sorceress and her love of fire shows that she used to simply be called the ‘Fire Hero’. Wasn’t really sure how this worked in the game because she didn’t learn any fire magic until a year of playing had passed. It takes a while to get to those spells, but book Nyx never had that problem. She’s a special kind of caster and her biggest problem is holding back instead of mustering up enough power to fight. This turned him into the ‘Power Hero’, but that still didn’t work out very well. So, what has Nyx become in the final incarnation?
Well, I stopped titling heroes, which made it easier. Focusing solely on the core virtue/emotion helped and it became clear what Nyx was. She is very defiant and has a strong will, which has been apparent since the beginning. Like Luke, she rarely backs down from a fight. The difference is that while Luke will leap with a mental focus on helping others, Nyx enters a fight as if she has to prove herself. Think about a lot of her big battles in the series. Trinity, Kalam, the Krypters, and Stephen all put her in a position where she had to prove she was stronger. There have been several times where she has been put in a position where her magic surges in an act of defiance or willpower such as when the Lich got his hands on her.
There is the opposite side of the coin too. I mentioned yesterday that powers can wane when the core virtue is damaged. Think about Nyx and the goblin swarm. It is established that casters can lose their magic after a trauma like what happened to Nyx. Still, there were a few odd instances. She could get sparks at times, which meant her aura was still active. There was something else blocking her from accessing it. That would be that she lost a lot of her defiant spirit until she was put in the position where she had to save Luke from the brink of death. This weakness of the champions does act as a nasty crutch for Nyx and might even give Trinity the advantage in their feud. It might be one of the few checks that I have on Nyx’s power beyond her difficulty with seeing illusions.
Oh and for anyone thinking this is the big secret behind Nyx’s magic . . . it isn’t. There’s more to her than she realizes and The Compass Key starts that path.

I really like NYX and was very much concerned after the goblin swarm. I gotta move these books up in the TBR. I still am falling behind.
