The Crying Demon

A demon with a tear

An emotionless mask

My mask

If I am this mask

Why does my heart decide?

It is an organ of caring

But that should not push me

Do not misunderstand

I do care

I want to help

Yet my heart

Is always crushed

And I still think with it

Feel with it

Only to be hurt again

Is that what my mask is

An emotionless face of a demon

With a heart

Too stubborn to die

This is another ‘From Israel’ poem and I’m seeing a big theme of heartbreak in them.  This specific poem came after a weird sculpting lesson during one of the middle weeks.  We were told to make masks that shows our inner being, but think very little about it.  At least that’s what I think it was because at the time I was in a dark place.  So, I made a demon mask and then I added tears to it.  Sadly, the mask didn’t make it through the flight back from Israel.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

Sad, but very emotional. And you said I was the emotional poet.

  2. “Do not misunderstand” in most poems can stir a bit of anxiety in the reader. Especially, when there is a mask. 🙂

Liked the poem and the story behind it…too bad you lost the mask!

Sad, in a good way, sort of. Lots of emotion. And the picture did catch my eye (not sure if pun is intended)

Poignant, Charles. Masks – I hate masks! The irony is that I wear one every day. Only the people here on WP actually see me unmasked. Hmmm…maybe this is why I hate them! I would have loved to see the mask you made…

    • It wasn’t that amazing. No features besides the horns, a slit mouth, nostrils, and a tear. I have no sculpting ability.

I’m not sure of my opinion on masks. As a fiction writer that mentally gets into his characters, I feel like I’m flipping masks on and off. That’s probably not what other people think or talk about with masks though.
