Character Origin: Roland Gauntlier

I haven’t done one of these in a while, so I’m going to go to another minor character from Beginning of a Hero.

Roland Gauntlier is a strange one because he had no preparation.  Even after he was given a name and drove Luke into the ground, I had no interest in him.  He was the big student that Luke angered at one point.  Then he became the son of a professional fighter and his last name was ‘Flare’.  You can guess what I was watching when I came up with that surname.  During the last editing round, I changed him to Gauntlier because I wanted to give him a more interesting last name.  Also, I wasn’t sure about the legality of using ‘Flare’ as a last name.

Now, Roland popped up a few times when I didn’t expect him.  Usually around Kira, so I think he has a crush on her.  It was something that I couldn’t investigate because it felt like it was so minor.  That and Kira had her sights set on Luke, so poor Roland got the cold shoulder.  At least I gave him something to be proud of near the end.

You might be wondering why I’m giving such a minor character an origin post.  Does he show up again in Legends of Windemere?  I don’t know yet.  Truthfully, I don’t know where he went after graduating.  I do know where he ends up at some point, which was an accident.  Imagine my confusion when I was outlining the stand-alone book that comes after Legends of Windemere and a warrior named Roland showed up in the cast.  I think he’s destined to be a background character in various stories.  So, I’m going to keep my eye on him.  Let me know if you see him doing anything suspicious when my back is turned.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

I love stuff like this. Think Star Wars, Bobba Fett was just a minor character but snowballed into something much more because of the fans. So, you never know how it might turn out. 😀

    • Exactly. I do wonder which character is going to end up being my Bobba Fett and force me to come up with some ridiculous way to bring him/her back to life. You know Fett is going to be in the new movies.

Really?!? *blech* I’m not liking what I am hearing at all. Well, in JJ Abrams I trust.

      • All I know is that Ford, Fisher, and Hamill are going to be in it. Even that I’m not sure about. Though, Bobba Fett was written back to life in the 80’s (or maybe 90’s). It was a comic book that did and then he showed up in a few of the novels.

This gives me the sort of feeling of the variant “Cid” characters from the Final Fantasy series. Nice! 🙂

    • I’d love to make a Cid character in my stories. I have something set up for something like that, but I keep forgetting to put it in. I should probably change that before I lose my chance.
