Amused by Myself

I just read a part of my latest book that made me smile because I totally forgot about it.  It was only a few lines of dialogue where a character shows he’s more suited to his new role than people would expect.

I’m wonder if anybody editing out there has ever gotten to a part where they’re amused by what they did or they go ‘I forgot about that, but I’m really impressed with myself’.  Authors tend to be their own worst critic, so I can only assume that this event is a rarity.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  1. That’s great. Even as I review the first draft of the novel I’m currently writing, I find parts that make me cringe and parts that make me more proud of myself. Ha, I guess I’m sharing more of the parts I like on my blog!

I’ve been tossing up sections whether good or bad. One thing that’s a shame is that a section of my second book has to be kept a secret until it’s out. It’s an amazing scene that makes me tear up and angered a few friends when I wrote it. I’d love to show it off, but it’s such a big spoiler that I can’t. Guess it’s smart to keep some things under wraps.

      • You’ve got me on the edge of my seat already!

But yup, I know what you mean… I’m sharing some first draft excerpts (which is scary enough) but I’m not posting any major plot points.

I decided to do the first 25 chapter sections of each book or stop once it goes live on Amazon Kindle. Works as a great novel sample and keeps people’s interest peaked. I figure as long as the ending isn’t revealed or any of the big secrets, I’m good.

Yes, as I was working on the end of a major rewrite for my novel, I went back to the first chapter (which I hadn’t messed around with for some time) and I thought, “Wow, this is pretty intense.” I tried not to let my head swell too much, but I felt proud of what I had accomplished, and I think we should take joy in those successes when we notice them.

I love it when that happens. It’s the writing equivalent of finding $20 in your pant’s pocket.

  4. That’s the best part of writing, in my opinion. That point where you go, “Hey, I’m kind of awesome!” Although my mother and I have been through Imminent Danger so many times that we can’t remember who wrote what any more, lol.
