Editing Confusion

So, here I am taking a small break from editing ‘Legends of Windemere: Family of the Tri-Rune’.  This is the 4th novel of the series and I’m noticed something that’s rather strange and possibly disturbing.  This is my second time editing the book since I do a chapter edit as I go along with the first draft.  Yet, I’m finding less to edit than the first three books.  I admit that it took me longer to write this one due to a sudden adoption of a meticulous focus.  Still, I’m so used to my pages being covered in pencil marks, notes, and erased notes that I’ll try to read later when I type in the changes.

Is it possible that I somehow locked down a style after spending 6 months editing the first three books non-stop?  Is it even possible for a writer to get to a point where they aren’t massively tearing apart their first draft?

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

For me I’ve gotten to a point where I’m way too close to it and can’t see any more errors on the page. I don’t know if that’s what’s happening for you or if you’re just typo free. Usually at this point for me I turn to beta readers to open my eyes to errors of story (vs. only typos). Do you always edit chronologically in your story, or do you ever edit out of order? Do you ever change up the font for editing?

I’m not typo free, but not finding much to add. I edited the first three books in 2,3,1 order, but I just finished the 4th, so it’s kind of on its own.

Well, then it sounds like it makes sense you’d be tearing it apart less, being the 4th book. Either way, I envy your progress. I’m still working on Book 1 of my current series and getting it ready to query out. I had a Book 2 and part of Book 3 written, but with the big revamps I did on Book 1 those are basically out the window. 😉

To be honest, I’ve been outlining and working on this stories for 12+ years. So, they’ve become second nature.

12+ years, well no wonder you’ve got little you feel like you have to tear apart! Nice work!

Thanks. Now, if I could only get these e-book sites to work with me, I’ll be debuting my book tomorrow morning. They’re driving me nuts.

Yikes! Good luck. Technology is a blessing and a curse. 😉

Thanks. I think I got it done and my stuff is under review for 24-48 hours. Now, I do that oh-so-fun chore of advertising.
