Everyone has their own opinion on society. Not only its current state, but its past and future. Most people will claim the time period they grew up in was the best. Others will hate their time and look at the past with rose-colored glasses. You have those who judge the past by modern rules while others ignore the bad of the past. All of this creates a strange sense of civilization where people might not agree on much beyond the simple facts. So, let’s get opinions:

What do you think is the greatest invention made by civilization?
Agriculture.
What do think is the worst invention that others think is great?
Social hierarchy, such as a king, emperor, classes of people or castes.
What part of human nature do you think is the most important one for civilizations to appear and thrive?
Imagination and foresight coupled with the ability to organize and cooperate as a group. Although one could argue that some insects and other species have similar qualities.

I wonder about the hierarchy being an invention. Various animals have such systems with group leaders and lower ranking members. So, I wonder if such a thing is hardwired into humanity at some level.

The greatest invention made was possibly the wheel. Where would we be today without it. So much depends on it, and not only transport.
The worst is, in mind, money. So many of the evils of the world come from people wanting more (even when they have more than enough). From theft to wars–they are all about getting more wealth.
For civilizations to appear and thrive you need co-operation and understanding.

Money definitely triggers massive human greed. I have a feeling bartering would create similar situations though. A person will horde as much of something as possible to make them more likely to trade. I think any type of system that doesn’t let people have what they need at the start will have issues.
