I’ve got my son for the weekend, so I didn’t want to do anything too complicated. He loves animals, so I thought it would be fun to make a post with a bunch of strange beasts that aren’t fictional. This is a way that I design monsters too because nature has so much inspiration. I found all of these with a Yahoo image search:

It always keeps us guessing. Funny thing is I moved this post around for a month. Now it’s on a day I’m at the zoo

I’ve never heard of any of these animals besides the echidna (mainly because of Knuckles) and the okapi. Those other animals certainly look strange and I never thought they existed. I found out sometime last year that the DRC is the only place where the okapi is native to.

I wasn’t sure about including the okapi because there’s one at the zoo here. Figured that would just be me and a few others who recognized it. Didn’t know that about them.

Gotcha. I think it’s still an uncommon animal and not everyone knows what it is at least in my experience. Another fact that the closest animal it’s related to is the giraffe of all things. I would’ve thought it would be closer to zebras and horses, but I would’ve never guessed that. Yep. They are a Congolese animal. I was also thinking if okapis were ever in any kind of media. Strangely enough, I just remembered one episode of a very certain old-school anime that you know that did feature a herd of those animals in one episode.

The okapi and giraffe connection is a strange one. Kind of like how hyrax (fuzzy rodents) are supposedly the closest relatives of elephants. Trying to remember the anime with an okapi herd. I looked up ‘okapi anime’ and thoroughly regret that decision.

It sure is and I wouldn’t have expected that. That’s another good point and I didn’t think of that with the hyrax. I was actually referring to an episode of Kimba where that happens in one of the later episodes, but I didn’t want to overdo the namedropping given our previous conversations.

Ah . . . I actually never saw Kimba. So, I didn’t know that.

That’s fine. I just wanted to use that as an example since you don’t see those animals that often even if it was just for one episode. It would be cool to see one either in a zoo or actually in their environment if that’s allowed there. It’s fascinating how so many of these animals exist or how people are finding new species. If I’m not mistaken, I think they found a new species of chameleons in Madagascar if I’m not mistaken not that long ago. I’ll have to find the article about that.

Okapi in the wild would be cool. Although they’re called the ghosts of the forest for a reason. Even the one at the zoo here was hard to see yesterday.

Sure thing. I wasn’t aware of that nickname. It must be their camouflaging ability in certain environments.

I love it. I wrote Saiga antelope into Serang, since the book needed something on the steppes.

That one is what made me want to do the post. Such an odd, but cool creature.

Maybe. I mean, I’m sure these animals are somebody’s taste. My son really likes the maned wolf and okapi.

I’ve actually seen a couple of these before, but their color and unusual appearances remind me of how great nature is! Thanks for the treat!

You’re welcome. I’ve seen several of them online. I just realized how many people didn’t know they existed. Partially because I met someone who didn’t believe kangaroos were real.
