Legends of Windemere – Beginning of a Hero by Charles E. Yallowitz.

TOTAL STARS:  FOUR STARS     ****

I read this book last summer and loved it. This review is long overdue.

Luke Callindor is a young forest tracker who comes from a long line of honored warriors. About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  2. Congratulations, Charles. An honest and well deserved four-star review beats the multitude of fluffy, bogus five-star reviews, any day of the week. This is something to derive a genuine sense of accomplishment from.

When you have a moment, would you please expand on your reply to Mr. Howell regarding how the free weekend destroyed Beginning of a Hero and its sequels, S.V.P.?

    • Basically, the books were selling at a decent pace for the end of the month. I did the free period for the first book, which moved it from the ‘Paid eBook’ Amazon lists to the ‘Free eBook’ one. When the book returned to the Paid lists, it was really far down the rankings. This seemed to just make it stop selling and the others slowed to a crawl.

The reason I point to the free weekend is because that’s the only thing that changed. I kept doing the marketing as usual and even put a little money behind Beginning of a Hero to get it a few sales. Got nothing for some reason.

Now, this seems to be the opposite of what happens for other people. They do a free period and the momentum carries over a bit to when it goes back to a priced book. Doesn’t seem to have happened this time.

      • Interesting (but sad that you had to experience it). I wonder if you can achieve the desired outcome without the adverse side effect by reducing the book price to a minimal effort, and offering to refund/PayPal back the purchase price to anyone who emails you their receipt.

Marketing is a tough nut to crack, obviously.

      • I go through Amazon so the refund thing wouldn’t work. It would also open me up to people simply reading the book and coming for money. The book is priced at 99 cents, so there isn’t any lower it can go.

The free period seems to work out for some genres. Sadly, fantasy isn’t one of them.

      • I’m starting to think that I will require a good Ouija board at midnight of the fall equinox to figure out the marketing side of things. I hope I do not start to hope for a failed feminist attempted assassination of me as a means to get cheap publicity.

      • Those failed assassination attempts are overdone anyway.
