I’ve always loved this song. I think I really need it today. I have no musical talent, but I always sway to the rhythm and occasionally sing it. The best singing incident with this song was in college. We were drunk and tried singing ‘Land Down Under’ and that failed epically. Somebody started Piano Man and we believe we nailed it. Our proof is that nobody in the dorm called the RA to report the noise.
Listening to the song now, I get the image of an entertainer that is working hard to make people happy. Isn’t that what a lot of people want to do when in an entertaining field? Even if it’s only a bar full of people, we get such a thrill from the acknowledgement. Maybe that’s just me.
So, this song is special to me and I hope it brings a smile to your face. I’m still fighting the ‘blah’, but I think this song is helping.

I adore this song, and I sing along all the time (in spite of the fact that I neither play the piano nor possess the equipment necessary to be labelled any sort of a man). Thank you for posting, and I hope you continue to find ways to fight the blah.

Thanks. I’m going to keep fighting. Might put a beer in the fridge and end my day with Piano Man on replay.

Thanks Charles. It is special to me because my Grandpa on my mother’s side was a piano man. My grandparents were divorced back when divorce was taboo. Grandma remarried and divorced him twice because of his drinking problem. The only real memories that I have of him were of his dive shop in the Keys and going to see him play piano in smokey venues we were really to young to be inside. He had an old ornate player piano in his house.

Great song and a great artist. My sister met him at a party when she was still in high school and several years before this song. He was with a local band at the time. He has always been at his best when expressing social commentary.

Don’t think I saw it twice, so your safe. I like so many of his songs. Big Shot, Uptown Girl, and The Entertainer are three that I can think of right away.

My brain is faulty – you just reminded me of how much of his work I enjoy. I liked your comment about how the man is just really trying to entertain.
That may be part of the blahs – as writers, even though we are emotional balls of wacky, we’re also trying to entertain. And if – temporarily – we don’t find ourselves entertaining, it’s an added blow.

What I’ve always liked about the song is the story he is able to tell with such few words. The pictures he paints. The emotions he describes.

In the usually so quiet neighborhood there was a big party of young people last Saturday. Through my open window they made my day (or rather: late evening) by playing guitar and singing in a chorus a wonderful song from the past, which we “older” ones have forgotten. It brought good memories from my student years and I sang along. (The youngsters left then to continue they party somewhere else. Maybe they heard me. :D)

What song did they sing? Was it this one?

It´s a local (I live somewhere in Northern Europe) ballad about a man who is planning to write a letter to his old honey from the past and wondering about if she would still feel the passion and like to meet him. He´s dreaming about how they would go to a lake where he could dive a white pearl to her.

Sounds sweet. They don’t make many songs like that or Piano Man any more. I feel old.
