I thought I posted this one before, but apparently I never have. Something about this song always drew me in. I could never tell if it was a sad or hopeful song either, but that might have been part of the point. In the end, it’s still a song that I drop everything to listen to or go hunting for on my iPod.

I was Pissed when the Rolling Stones crushed this group just becasue of a small sound bite to a song that I had never heard of. I can understand the whole ‘sampling’ thing, but seriously to kill a promising group over it – [explitive deleted]

That’s what happened to them? I always wondered where they went. That royally sucks.

The stones sued them and in addition to getting all their money they got the rights to the song and sold it to commercials. Sucks doesn’t even start to cover it

Which song was it that they got? I heard Bittersweet Symphony and then they were gone.

That’s the one the symphony part was in a stones song

So, their greatest song was taken by the Stones. Glad I’m not a musician because that world seems to be vicious.

wow – I didn’t know that about the stones and the verve. that is very sad – a bittersweet symphony indeed, that such a beautiful song was fought over, particularly by a band who hardly needed the money. I agree, Charles, that this song is somehow melancholy, yet uplifting at the same time – like thinking of a memory – as soon as I hear it, it always makes me smile.

Yeah. Might be smiling less now that I know what happened to it. I’m not very interested in listening to Rolling Stones now.

I was so interested, I wanted to look into the story behind the lawsuit – there’s a badly written, but succinct article (link below) – which has the original song the verve sampled. It also clears up that it was not the Stones themselves, but their unscrupulous ex-manager, Allen Klein (who incidentally managed to get ownership of most of the Stones songs and it seems was also a contributing factor to the break-up of the Beatles) who sued.

Always the evil ex-manager. That guy sounds like the ultimate evil too.

Love this song – it was really popular the first year I moved to Ireland (And it’s on the company music system right now… freaky!)
