Long ago I came up with an idea. This is before I jumped on the blog-o-sphere and was a simple dreamy-eyed, whiskey-drinking aspiring author editing his finished books. The idea stemmed from the fact that I can’t draw. The rules are simple really:
Draw a picture of one of the characters from Legends of Windemere.
I’m torn between accepting all comers or choosing a character for a certain amount of time then setting up a poll to choose the winner. Winner would get a free PDF copy of Prodigy of Rainbow Tower.
Any feedback or ideas about this? Has anybody ever tried a contest like this for their own books?

That is a fabulous idea! Not only to bring attention to your work but to highlight someone’s art, excellent:)

Thanks. Now I just need to find a way to promote it and if I should make it a free-for-all or a specific character per month.

I would go for specifics, otherwise how will you judge which is the best?

Good idea. So, I’ll make April a month for a specific character. I’m thinking Nimby.

Thanks. I’m probably going to start it off on Monday with April 1st. I’m still trying to figure out what to do for prizes. Maybe a single giftcard for the winner or should I stick to free copies of the second book?

Maybe a signed copy? Or are they going to be digital?

They’re all digital for now, but I do have a paperback option. If I do a first prize of signed paperback and 2nd/3rd prize of free digital copy then it could work. Not sure how to differentiate 2nd and 3rd prize.

Second prize: and a signed bookmark, third prize just digital copy?

So second prize would be only a signed bookmark or the bookmark with a digital copy? I could also do a PDF on CD with a nice label instead of emailing since I can’t get the epub makers to work any more.

Both, book mark and digital copy, cd would be excellent.

I’ll make those the prizes for April. Probably do it for both the review contest and the artist contest. Make life a little easier. Though, I’d have to decide what to do if 2nd and 3rd place don’t have the first book. Unless the review contest is entirely CD’s of the sequel and the art contest revolves around the first book. I guess I’m working under the assumption that all of the artists will have read Beginning of a Hero.

plus, if the person hasn’t read the book yet, you might be able to encourage them to by just offering a brief description of the character and if they win, it will encourage them to pick up a copy so they can say—I illustrated a character for this book!

Excellent point that I honestly didn’t think of.
