I realized that I forgot to mention something on the ‘How to Self-Publish Kindle Style’ post.  It’s something that has been asked to me before.  The question is this:

Should I or shouldn’t I get a domain website?

I’m not techno-savvy, so I can’t really explain what a domain website is.  Basically, if you go to a site and there’s nothing extra in the address, like wordpress.com, then it’s a domain.  You have to pay for this because domains aren’t free and are usually a yearly or monthly payment.  I think I pay about $20 a year for my domain here.

Now, I started out thinking that I had time to get one.  I could get one when the books went live.  Well, a friend of mine who makes comics told me differently.  He pointed out that if you want to have a specific domain then you should do it immediately.  Again, this depends on your sense of urgency.  The threat is that if you wait too long, somebody might take your domain name.  For example, I could wait until the books go live and gain a very loyal fan.  This fan goes off to make a fan-site and takes the legendsofwindemere domain name since it’s available.  Now, I’m left without the most obvious domain name for my site.  There’s also apparently people who go around making domains that people might want in order to screw with them or make them into porn sites.  I’ve read about this and have not seen it in action, so I could just be falling into paranoia.

Anyway, I would suggest getting a domain if you can afford it and it’s something you really want to do.  It doesn’t change too much on wordpress from what I can tell, but you do protect your site name if you have a specific one in mind.
