National Escargot Day: ‘Gross’ Foods

For those who don’t know, Escargot are snails that people eat.  I’ve never tried and I don’t really want to.  This is the main food I think of when I think of ‘gross’ things people eat.  I know I shouldn’t judge, but it’s hard here.  Then again, people judge me for eating calamari because they think squid is gross.  There are other ‘gross’ foods in my mind as well:

  • Frog legs
  • Cow tongue
  • Liver
  • Haggis
  • Tarantulas
  • Ants
  • Monkey brain
  • Cavier
  • Gefilte fish

The list can keep going.  Yet, I know there are big audiences for all of what I mentioned here.  Otherwise, people would know that they’re edible.  They would have disappeared from the global menu long ago.  It all got me thinking too.

  1. What is a food that you find gross and others love?
  2. What is the strangest food you have ever heard of?
  3. What food do you love that others find gross?

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  2. I have had snails a few times in the south of Spain, a bit tricky to eat with like a toothpick to get the out of the shell, covered with garlic butter. I have to confess I have tried most of the things on your list, including frogs legs, and yes they do taste like chicken.

  3. Whipped yellow squash I find very gross. Most love it but even the smell starts a gag reflex.

The Chinese eat some weird things but I guess the most unusal is the Century egg. (Aged a month or more till the white is like jelly and the yolk is dark green- no thanks)

    I love caviar.

I do like snails, haggis, and caviar. Not a fan of liver since my Mom used to cook liver and onions for us when I was growing up. Have not tried ants, but do like fried grasshoppers. The one thing I can’t eat is cilantro – I have the gene which makes it taste like soap. Yuck. I’m pretty much an omnivore and will try anything at least once!

    • I can eat cilantro, but other foods give me that reaction. Never had the chance to try haggis, but I don’t think I would if I had to pay. Caviar . . . Seen it offered, but never had an interest in trying.

Haggis sounds horrible in its preparation but I’ve never had it in a restaurant where it wasn’t delicious. I ate it (along with smoked salmon) all over Scotland. Caviar is very salty, maybe an acquired taste? But not overwhelmingly fishy. Great with some cream cheese – if you can afford the caviar.

      • Not a fan of cream cheese either. Guess I’m double out.

  5. I’ve never had occasion to eat insects or land born arachnids, but a lot of the other stuff is on my list. I kind of like escargot, and la lingua tacos are amazing.
