Questions 3: Monster Hunting?

Not sure where the picture above came from, but it worked for the original post idea.  I was going to do a ‘Ye Olde Safari Gear Shoppe’.  I couldn’t get the concept to work because going on a monster hunting adventure isn’t a general, simple thing.  A lot of gear would be specific to the monsters, terrain, and people.  After multiple attempts, I gave up and decided to open the floor.  I mean, if going on any adventure depends on the individual then lets hear from individuals.  Keep in mind that these questions are going to work off the concept of you willingly going on a monster hunting adventure.

  1. What terrain would you pick to go monster hunting in?
  2. What is one piece of gear you would take that is not armor, weapons, or basic camping?
  3. What would be one monster that you would search for?

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

    1. Probably rocky terrain because of caves where monsters might hide. Okay, I have probably played too many games of Pokémon and caught too many Pokémon in caves.
    2. What is one piece of gear you would take that is not armor, weapons, or basic camping? A mirror with a handle. Great for holding out and catching sight of creatures around a corner.
    3. What would be one monster that you would search for? Dragons for their hoards. If the category is broadened to mythical creatures, then fairies, phoenixes, and unicorns would be on my list.

I would pick an island terrain – limited area! How about binoculars for a piece of gear?

    And definitely dragons!

  3. I would think I would have the most luck monster hunting in the mountains. Hard to move around and gives monsters good cover.

I would take a whistle. I don’t think they have heard one and might be intrigued.

I join the others in choosing dragons.

  4. A mall. One with coffee, a food court, and at least one beer hall. A flashlight just in case. Maybe a leprechaun, near the beer hall, with surplus gold.

    1. Forest. Lots of trees to hide or dodge around. Or to climb if the monster is earthbound.
    2. Are we allowed magical items? An invisibility cloak might be useful, except for creatures with a strong sense of smell. (I had a character caught out like that. The character was invisible, but a dog smelled him.) If no magical items, then a machete. Useful for clearing brushwood and undergrowth.and for fighting if needed.
    3. Dragons are too dangerous. Highly intelligent with magic, too. I had trouble with this one. So many monsters. I don’t count unicorns or pegasi, or other creatures like that as monsters. Monsters have to be evil, or at least harmful to humans. So maybe I’d go for werewolves or vampires.

    • Another issue with invisibility is that it doesn’t mask sounds. People tend to forget that also, especially in DnD. Think you need inaudibility for that and use it in conjunction with invisibility. Monster definition is interesting. I usually have it be anything that isn’t a standard creature. Never thought of unicorns and pegasi as pure good too, which might be why I put them with other monsters.

    1. What terrain would you pick to go monster hunting in? I don’t think I would just hunt monsters generally. It would have to be a specific one I was after for a clear reason.
    2. What is one piece of gear you would take that is not armor, weapons, or basic camping? A journal to draw a map, track evidence, and record what worked or didn’t work.
    3. What would be one monster that you would search for? I would hunt a unicorn and try to learn its secrets for healing.
