Why Write Short Stories?
“To each his own” as it’s said. I’m glad you enjoy the short story process and know the reasons cited are spot on—I have a best friend who only reads short stories and for the reasons you’ve stated. For me, I am addicted to writing (I’m self-published) and reading novels for no apparent reason other than the deep emotional escape doing so provides. I wonder if short story writers are grounded in the present, while novelists are writers driven by the need to escape the present. Anybody have any thoughts about this?

No idea really. I’m a novelist. I do a few short story collections, but it’s hard to not go all out.
