I know these posts don’t have a good track record, but I’m still recovering after the kid’s break and am gearing up to dive back into writing. Though given how the week went, I’m probably editing right now. So I’m going to put a few characters on the hot seat this week as some hype for The Mercenary Prince. First on the list, the hero of the hour:

Cover Art by Jason Pedersen
What is there to say about him that hasn’t already been said? He is an honorable warrior with the mind of a tactician and the heart of a hapless romantic. I’d say hopeless, but he probably has a shot with Nyx. Delvin is very loyal to his friends and tends to be rather laid back unless you make him mad. What can you talk to him about?
- Training with Selenia Hamilton.
- Growing up on the Yagervan Plains.
- Being a champion and opinions on the others.
- Being a mercenary.
- Whatever else you think he’d know about.
So ask away and have some 2016 fun.

My question might be noobish, but I am looking for advice on how to get used to wearing Mercenary attire more easily? Is there such a thing as Mercenary attire? I am clueless!

It really depends on your weapons and skills. We’re kind of like adventurers, but with a more monetary goal. I’d recommend never wearing armor that makes you too heavy for running or impedes your flexibility. Nothing flashy either because that just makes you a target.

I can go down with that. I guess duel wielding some smaller blades would be my ‘weapon of choice’. You mention flashiness. I think sometimes, flashiness is a valid way of hunt for your target, thought me personal I would rather always take the Cloak and dagger back alley approach 🙂

Then you would want leather armor or regular clothes with patches over vital areas. As far as flashiness goes, it doesn’t work as much as you would think. At least for mercenaries, the more attention you bring to yourself, the more arrows that are fired in your direction.

What weapon did you find hardest to master?

I actually only know how to use longswords and daggers with master level skill. Never saw a point in mastering multiple weapons because that can take a lifetime. Most who try end up becoming only marginally skilled in all of the weapons.

What can a really good mercenary earn in a year’s time?

Tough one. A lot of what you make goes back into the business. Even a solitary has to pay for lodging, family, weapon and armor maintenance, and any gear that needs replacing. Personally, I think the goal should be to make enough money that you can go a season without work. That could be maybe 200 diamond spheres? I might be overestimating it though.

So a hundred will do a season?

I could probably make that last a year, but I’m rather frugal. Most mercenaries like to indulge in their vices during their off periods.
The best way to make a good and stable living is to join a mercenary army. This can be a salary job or paid by certain circumstances. It takes the pressure of having to find work though.

Hello Prince Delvin I`m pleased to meet you. My question for you is what like was it growing up in the Yagervan Plains?

That’s a tough one since I got lost at the age of 8. So I never went through a lot of the tribal rites or reached the age where I had to really help with the daily workload. Things are also a little hazy.
There’s a lot of traveling since the tribes follow various animal migrations. You never stay in one spot for more than a few days during the moving times, but there are periods where the herds remain in one spot for a month or two. You always had to be cautious too because of the poisonous snakes, hooded lions, and other predators. As bad as some of that sounds, it was really simple when compared to city and mercenary life.
