Quest of the Broken Hearted Part 3 (Possible Spoilers)

I’m sure people are sick of this one, but I’m having fun playing around with this possible idea.  It’s a nice break from the book writing and I got to play around with a few test scenes yesterday.  Just some one-page written sketches to see what works and what doesn’t.  It lead to a few more changes and some lessons learned:

  1. Some monsters don’t make for good challenges.  Zombie farmer?  Lame.  Zombie farm animals with a floating reaper?  Much better.
  2. I don’t need as many supporting cast members as I thought, so Dung the Troll has to be cut.
  3. A demon interested in wealth would make rules that revolve around such things instead of violence.
  4. There’s no female equivalent for Earl.
  5. If a character is suffering from a broken heart due to the loss (not necessarily death) of a loved one then brothel girl might not be a good idea.  Every test scene resulted in a breakdown into tears or violence.  Oddly enough, I came up with a better idea for this one.  At least for now because Kira is evolving in a strange direction in the novels, so it might not even result in an ending that makes this story viable.
  6. Don’t force suicidal or depressive mindsets on characters when it might not work.  I thought it would make sense due to events of book 7.  Instead, Kira is proving to be more mentally resilient than I expected.  Shouldn’t be surprised since she started as a one-scene character named Linny.

This has been a big learning experience as far as jumping a character into a new story after their first one is done.  Should be good experience for when I try it again with one or two other series.  It’s an entirely different attempt because you’re not coming in with a ‘clean slate’ character.  You have an established mentality and history that the readers have followed.  At this point, I might write this book even if Legends of Windemere doesn’t go in this direction.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  1. As I have said before, I’m just amazed at the creativity writers have – and all the possibilities they come up with – obviously not everyone will like every single one of them, but the possibilities seem endless.
