I was going to do an animal post or maybe choose a funny holiday. Then, I noticed that this was today. I know many people who survived cancer. Pretty sure most people can claim that. Been lucky to not have to face this monster myself so far, but I know it’s a brutal battle. Anyone who survives it should be honored. That’s really it. Give a hug to a cancer survivor today. Ask permission first, of course.

About Charles Yallowitz
Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.
I hope “most” people can’t claim this. It’s awful and should not be something anyone has to go through.
My ex abuser had a diagnosis of sarcoma, very rare type in adults, and then amazingly, just 2 years later, I had my own sarcoma diagnosis. Literal proof that my experience with him was poison. When I was diagnosed, I was told by family members that … And I do quote… “Oh, everyone has cancer.” And “well, your cancer was easy, just cut it out. It wasn’t like your step sister who went through this and this and this….”
Thanks for demeaning what I went through, family. Thanks for letting me know it doesn’t matter to you. There was nothing easy about it.
13 years later, I’m so grateful for still being here complete with 2 legs (because that was in question for a while) and get to enjoy my amazing husband.
My step sister is still here too, still fighting 9 years later. My ex abuser and his entire miserable family are all gone. He died of pancreatic cancer.

Unfortunately, I do think most people have either had cancer or have had someone close to them battle it. With it being such a wide ranging category, it seems so easy to get, especially skin cancer. Yet, it’s weird how many aren’t diagnosed until it’s advanced pretty far.

As a survivor I want to thank you for this terrific post. If anyone wants to hung me no permission is required. Thanks, Charles.

A special call out for children and young people who can have awful brain tumours or rare cancers. Those of us who get cancer when we’re older and have already had our families and a life are lucky.

I can see that, but I really don’t want to put one group above another on this day. It should be for all cancer survivors. Not every adult has their family, achieved their dreams, or lived a full life. I know many who suffered many setbacks, began getting their lives back in order, and then cancer took them. The disease does not differentiate between its victims.

So true Charles, cancer is an unfair game and we don’t understand the rules.

Charles, you could have also combined this with your original animal post. My friend’s dog (only 2 years old) died of liver cancer.

Didn’t think of that, but wouldn’t animals count as cancer survivors? My animal posts tend to be informative about a specific species too.

You’re right, Charles. This small dog wasn’t a cancer survivor.
