It Knows

I have a new laptop on the way and I’m sure my current laptop knows this.  So far it has blue-screened, blocked Google Chrome, crashed Word, and refused to let Pandora work.  I’m kind of glad I won’t be on the computer much tomorrow because I don’t want to deal with this machine.  It isn’t ending our relationship on a good note.

Seriously, I want my music back.  I never noticed how my mind shuts down and stumbles without music.  I’ve been using it as background noise since Middle School, so I need it to focus.  Unless the issue is the internet.

Is there anything like Pandora that might work better?

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  1. I am torn between laughter and compassion. Sorry, can’t help with the Pandora part. Hope it works for you!

Spotify, Grooveshark, a YouTube playlist. I’m often in my Amazon Cloud for writing music. Hopefully your comp will start working again soon.

    • I used to use YouTube, but I liked the catch-all style of Pandora. I could go by band and genre instead of a specific song. I’ll try take a look at the other two. I’m hoping Pandora works again when my new laptop shows up Friday.

  3. Spotify. And if you are on a laptop it is free. I use Spotify on all my devices constantly.

Do you have nothing else you can play Pandora on? I can get it on my Kindle, my Roku, and my Blu Ray player.

    • Won’t work on my Kindle. Seems the issue is a combination of the Adblocker and my laptop having trouble staying alive.

I’m trying to figure out what to use as a web browser on the new machine when it arrives. Not a fan of working without an Adblocker, but I might have to.

  7. You have a jealous laptop. My computers are always on their best behavior when the replacement is on the way. “Honest, I’ll be good from now on.” 🙂

When you find something better, please share…

I would offer to help but I have no idea what Pandora is! Hope you enjoy your new laptop. 🙂

    • Pandora is an on-line music program where you can make your own station. It seems that the ad blocking programs are blocking it. It won’t even register if I make it immune to the blockers, so I have to shut them down. I have ads all over the place now, but that might also be because of my computer tripping over itself.

New laptop arrives tomorrow and I’ll have it up and running on Saturday.

That’s great that you can purchase a new laptop with your royalties. Can you write off the new laptop as an expense? I’m always curious how people who work from home do their taxes. Years ago (ok, a lifetime ago, in the early 1980s), I had a small home-based business selling handspun and hand-dyed yarn. (Yes, it was incredibly labor intensive. Suffice to say it didn’t last long.) Anyway, I had an accountant who helped me portion out my small studio apartment and such (and this was before personal computers). Flash forward to 2005. Now I’m thinking of freelance editing on the side of my regular job. Our current accountant explained how tricky business write-offs are now with personal computers and home offices. Ideally, I should be able to demonstrate that my PC is being used solely for work. Given that I’m a heavy-end user, I knew that would never fly. My home office would have to be solely for the purpose of work, no sleeping or knitting or sewing or other activities allowed. Again, that won’t fly because my “office” is also where I sleep.
(Sorry for the long comment. While my curiosity is sincere, I am also procrastinating.) I’m wondering, when does a writer start treating herself like a business? Should I first self publish and see if I get any interest in my work before I set myself up as a business, or should I set myself up as a business first and then publish? I didn’t have great business plans when I started the yarn company. I’d like to do things right this time, if I can figure out what right is 🙂 Would you mind sharing your experience, Charles?

Computers can sense hatred and they know when they are being replaced. My loyal machine of several years decided to melt down and cry when I so much as thought of booting out the old geezer in favor of a younger model. They will crash and burn and take your favorite files with them.
