Into Darkness Is Closing In!

I woke up to a swarm of ‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’ reviews and posts in my reader.  Now, people the one person in the galaxy that won’t get to see the movie until June 4th, I’ve spent the morning hiding from these posts.  Nothing extreme.  Just under the bed with an electrified brick wall around it.  The reason for June 4th is that it’s my 8 Year Anniversary and my wife and always see the big sci-fi/fantasy movie and have lunch or dinner.  One day we’ll have the money to go on a real trip, but we make due.

Anyway, this makes me amused about something.  Before the internet (yes, children, there was a time before all this.), it was really hard to bump into movie and book spoilers.  When I was a kid in the 80’s, you had to see the movie or be told in person by someone that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker’s father.  You didn’t stumble onto it because a friend of a friend posted about it on somebody’s Facebook wall.  Assholes didn’t have the ability to run around IMDB forums and post spoilers as thread headings.  Some jackass did this for the last James Bond movie.  I was checking the forum on the Mel Brooks page and that was sitting right there.  Still a little miffed about that one.

Still, it’s interesting how we have all this information at our fingertips, but it might have come at the cost of suspense.  We never have to work harder to avoid spoilers than back when you had to work hard to find them.  Seriously, you had some level of pride being the only kid that knew the plot twist because you found the information somehow.  Now, the pride comes from being the only person in the room that didn’t rush off to Wikipedia to read the plot.

Good to get this sudden thought off my chest.  Now, I have a character to kill off.  Good day.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  1. “We never have to work harder to avoid spoilers than back when you had to work hard to find them.” I love it! I stumbled on a spoiler for Season Three of Downton Abbey, and I was so bummed! Having now finished watching it, I’m thankful that at least I didn’t stumble on the REALLY rotten spoiler! And that’s all I’ll say about that in case someone still hasn’t seen it.

    • Ouch. There are book spoilers that I still haven’t gotten over. Most of them revolve around Harry Potter. Rabid friends that read the new book in a week and asked me ‘Can you believe-‘ I never made it beyond the first book because of that.

You haven’t read ANY spoilers? You’re in for a treat then.

    • The local reviewer might have hinted at one. Said something about the villain’s ‘real identity’ without saying what it is. I have my suspicions, but not I’m going to spend the movie knowing there’s a twist coming. Takes some of the fun out of it.

  4. good post, funny and true, happy anniversary for the fourth, charles! I love that you and your wife are going to the pictures for your anniversary, there is something very romantic about that. Like you, I was a child of the eighties and I was thrilled to take my eldes to a star wars movie, like my father did for me in my youth, looks like I will get to take my youngest to one too! I haven’t seen the new star trek movie either, charles but I hope you have a good time, it should be good if the last one is anything to go by. 🙂

not so much a good day for the character about to be killed off. I live in the middle of nowhere so almost everything gets spoiled before I can see it, but I did manage to stay relatively in the dark about the Hobbit until I saw it last week… yes I know I am far behind on the times and it will probably be next year until I can see the second installment of Star Trek… so don’t spoil it for me when you see it on your anniversary… I still have to wait until the DVD release… I do have to admit I have read all the spoilers for the next 3 Star War films mostly because of the Disney factor…

    • I promise to behave. I’m not much of a movie reviewer in the first place and I avoid spoilers when I do mention it. Good job on The Hobbit avoidance. Did you think it was worth the wait?

I have to say when I first heard Jackson was going to break it into three movies as he did with LOTR I figured he was milking the franchise… LOTR made sense to do in 3 movies… The Hobbit I wasn’t so sure about until I saw the movie… I think it was the right choice… I enjoyed the movie, but part of me thinks they made some of the dwarfs too comical in appearance… but then I was always partial to Dwarves in the vain of Gimli… in fact I was looking for the resemblance in Gloin but found very little… in general I believe the film did the best it could with the magical way in which Tolkien weaved his tales..

      • The dwarves did come off a little too goofy at times. I wasn’t too thrilled with some of the liberties. Mostly, that albino orc. Didn’t really see the point in him.

I kind of agree with bringing Azog into the story as he is dead by this time, beheaded in the battle in which Thorin gets his oakenshield moniker, this appears in the appendixes of LOTR and I believe also in the Silmarillon if I remember correctly… I think the point was to add to Thorin’s backstory and to inject a little more action into the movie… and maybe to create tension

      • Definitely. It gives Thorin a more solid enemy to face in the Battle of Five Armies when the third movie comes around. Let’s face it. We can all see that one coming.

  6. I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been thinking this for a while… but on the (very) rare occasion that I get to see a film without knowing anything about it (except that it’s supposed tobe good) then it’s such a more enjoyable experience. I have avoided trailers and reviews for films in the past – but you seem to absorb info about them anyway!

    • Trailers have gotten so much worse. I forgot what movie or television show we saw a preview for, but my wife was livid that they blatantly showed the ending. Those are the previews that the world could do without.

  8. Good day to you, I was a new born child in the 80’s. I guess that means you’re not that old after all. It’s true though, back then the pride was in being the only one knowing the twist. The internet sure has allot of cons as much as its pros! I wonder how things will be in another 50 years or something..
    Thanks for sharing!

  9. I am the same way. I haven’t seen the movie yet but have been trying my hardest to stay away from spoilers. It’s almost impossible with the hundreds of reviews in every corner of my reader. I hope it is as good as everyone says.

  10. We saw it on Sunday….won’t say what we thought. Will wait until you see it to compare notes. I’m looking forward to the new Superman movie now.

    • Superman is definitely on the list. Just started seeing commercials for it. I’ll have to be careful talking about Star Trek though. I’m learning there are people who haven’t seen it and might not see it by the time I do. I’d hate to become ‘that guy’.

I found out Harry Potter lived one day before the books came out ( we pre-ordrered, and got in line at 10 PM at Borders.). It was courtesy of Wikipedia. I had been wanting to know if he would live or die for years , so I didn’t really mind. the suspense was killing me.
