A Week with Snow and Shovels

Okay, this week didn’t go exactly as planned.  I can’t even be sure of how I fell a little behind on the writing side of things.  Not enough that it destroys me, but I’m simply confused.  Time may have gotten away from me here.  Yet, it also had long moments of going slow.  Did I sit on my butt more often than I should have?  Not like I can do anything about it.   Still, it was a week . . . Seriously, what in the world was I up to?

I think stress is partially to blame.  Work was busy, but in a way that didn’t make me want to scream.  It just didn’t give me much thinking time.  The quiet moments were met with almost a serene meditation in preparation of the next move.  Also, getting stuff ready for the future since we’re heading into holiday break next week.  Work stress was just enough to have me slightly unfocused when I got home, so I ended most nights falling asleep before I was ready.  That’s been the norm since the weather got cold though.

I didn’t have my son this week, but we spent last Saturday together for Hanukah and Monday evening for our usual father/son night.  Had a lot of fun both times with cartoons, making latkes, homework, studying, watching ‘The Grinch’ from 2018, and playing some Super Smash Bros.  We’re both waiting for them to put Sephiroth in the store because I’ve been hoping for him to be a playable character for years.  Now, they only need to do the same with Alucard from Castlevania and I’ll be 100% happy.  Beyond all of that, my son and I had a fun time.

Although, there was the issue of him having two big tests this week.  On the same day too and he has a third next week.  With him being with his mom, I couldn’t do anything to help him study once Monday was over.  This was a first for me, so I was getting really antsy about things.  It’s really hard to know your child is going through a really big challenge and you’re not even on the sideline.  This gets doubled when you’ve been with him for every other obstacle in his education.  From what I can tell, he did good, but the worry definitely took its toll on me.  I’m planning on us taking it easy tomorrow with maybe some movie time even though we have to study too.  It’s always a quiet first day back.  Although, I promised him a scavenger hunt for all of his Hanukkah toys since he was with his mom for the holiday.  That should be fun.

My big goal was finishing the first big section of Do I Need to Use a Dragon? since I was 13 entries away.  Figured it was possibly since I had 7 days.  The plan was to write 2 each weekday and 3 last Sunday and today.  Well . . . things didn’t work out.  I got 3 written on that Sunday, but the next 3 days only had time for 1 entry.  Of course, we got a snow day in the Northeastern U.S.  That should have put me back on track, but there were two issues.  It was really cold and shoveling wore me down.  I only got 2 entries done before I ran out of energy.  Yesterday was another 1 and I doubt I’m going to get the last 4 done today before my son gets home.  Next writing period for me will be Christmas day, so I’ll work on getting blog stuff done to clear my plate of those things.

Another thing that got in the way is that certain people keep dropping things in my lap or calling me away from my laptop.  I should be used to this, but it’s a lot more disruptive when it comes to Do I Need to Use a Dragon?   With a fiction book, I can slide back into the mentality by looking over my outline or glancing at the screen.  Here, I’m speaking with my own voice and fighting against doubt in my own knowledge.  It takes a lot of time to craft the sentences to get my point across.  If I’m shaken out of my thoughts mid-paragraph then I have to read through the entire entry again because I need to get back on track.  It’s been really bad this week.  So, a section of this book takes longer than one of my fantasy books even without distractions.  At this rate, I’m guessing end of February or middle of March is when I’ll be done with this.  Got 45 sections to go.  Be nice to get it down to 41 by Monday, but I’m doubting it.

That’s been my week really.  Enjoyed some wine and learned red doesn’t really sit well with my senses.  Definitely more of a white or rose person.  I finished watching ‘Yu Yu Hakusho’ and got HBO Max set up on my Roku.  Been making my way through the rest of ‘Schitt’s Creek’ and I think I’ll finish that up this week.  I want to watch the ‘Harley Quinn’ cartoon, but I might save that for the first week in January.  My son can hear the names Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy from across the house.  If he starts to wake up across the hall and hears that then he might come to check it out, but it’s not for his age.  Safer to pick a short anime or something.  I really do have too many shows that I want to watch.

With next week being half work and half the start of break, I’m hoping to get some stuff done and relax.  I have my son for most of it though, so writing isn’t going to be very high on the list.  Still:

  1. Time with son.
  2. Time at work/school.
  3. Write more Do I Need to Use a Dragon?
  4. Finish watching Schitt’s Creek.
  5. Maybe some outline work.
  6. Watch ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ next weekend.
  7. Puzzle work.
  8. Get pizza at some point.
  9. Stay warm.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  2. Sometimes it just doesn’t want to work out. Drives me crazy when that happens, but I’m getting better about it.

  4. Glad you got to have some of Hanukkah with your son. The scavenger hunt for his toys sounds like a fun plan. I did that for my birthday presents one year and loved it.

Sorry you’ve been struggling with exhaustion, cold weather, and stress issues so much over the past few weeks. I did just catch up on reading your goal posts, but didn’t comment on the last two weeks since there wasn’t much to say that I couldn’t say today. In other words: I hope you get some decent rest, a good chunk of writing time, and some self care/relaxation time some time soon.
