Every Monday in October, I’m going to present two characters from War of Nytefall to answer questions in the comments. Hopefully, this gets a lot of responses and we have some fun. To check out the books in this series, here are the links:
Starting everything off is the duo of Clyde and Mab. He is the progenitor of the Dawn Fangs, which are powerful vampires that can retain their powers in the sun. They also have heartbeats. This happened due to Clyde being executed by sun beams just as the Great Cataclysm struck, which transformed him. He was buried for 50 years before he was helped out and discovered his changes. After a betrayal, he created his own kingdom of Nytefall and declared war on the old-world vampires. Clyde is fairly violent and fears succumbing to the monster that lurks in his soul. Prior to all of this, he was a vampiric thief who ran a very infamous gang alongside . . .
Mab (Winthrop, but she hates her last name) is Clyde’s partner and the one who never lost faith in him surviving the Great Cataclysm. She is the first one he turned from an old-world vampire into a Dawn Fang. Although, it was an accident. Her powers are more thief-like than Clyde’s illusions and monstrous strength. She can enter shadows and travel through a side dimension to come out of another shadow. Her other powers are speaking with the dead and growing claws, which makes her a great stealth operative. (By the way, Mab shows up in 3 of the 4 interviews this month.)
The relationship between Clyde and Mab has been difficulty, especially since it spans more than a century. They began a short rivalry as thieves, but they swiftly joined forces after Clyde stole a corn-shaped necklace on a dare from Mab. For a while, they were a duo until Mab’s brother joined them along with some friends to add mercenary work to what was now becoming a gang. Many other vampires joined, including Chastity who specialized in blackmail. Eventually, Clyde and Mab became lovers, which lasted for a while until a misunderstanding led Chastity to believe she had permission to seduce Clyde in the form of Mab. They were caught and the relationship ended, but the partnership remained since they agreed they made a good team. The spark was still there, which is why Mab never lost faith in Clyde’s survival.
Now, the two of them are seen as the leaders of the Dawn Fangs even though they are only partners. Well, they may have become something more, but Mab isn’t big on forgiveness and Clyde has other things on his mind. So, ask whatever questions you want and see what they say. Have fun.
My brain isn’t working this morning. Is there a lot of corn in Windemere? It seems like it might be rare if someone dedicated jewelry to it.

Clyde- Corn is pretty common here. I figure somebody really liked it and made jewelry of it. Kind of like those fruit pictures of your world.

When you’re super famous you can sell corn pendants as mementos of the movies they make.

To both Mab and Clyde (since I’d be interested in what both thinks):
What is it about the other person that you personally think makes you work so well as a team?
(Sorry if it’s not a great question… It’s the best I can think of).
LikeLike
Mab- We have similar styles that compliment each other. Both of us can be stealthy, but that’s more my specialty. Clyde can be more aggressive and has a better mind for illusion traps.
Clyde- We’ve also worked together for over one hundred years. Things were rough at first, but we fell into a system. Communication helps too. If we didn’t clearly talk or signal each other then our partnership would have fallen apart.

Great answers.

Mab, what is the most horrifying thing you’ve seen in the side dimension that you wish you hadn’t seen?’
Clyde, what qualities do you respect most in those you work with?
LikeLike
Mab- The void? Nothing really comes to mind as horrifying. Just odd creatures that you can’t find anywhere else.
Clyde- Loyalty and trust. I need to know my team has my back. It’s all over once you begin doubting your partners.

Do vampires have a religion, like are there catholic vampires and Jewish vampires? How do you know if the blood is Kosher?
LikeLike
Mab- What’s catholic and Jewish? That some kind of elf thing?
Clyde- I think kosher is food made with sea salt. Probably a sea elf thing.
Mab- Wait. She said religion. Must be some lost gods. God of Cat Licking and Goddess of Wishes? Never heard of them.

Makes sense. Everything is better with kosher salt. I believe you may be the original source of blood libel, but I adore your wickedness anyway.

Clyde- No proof of us committing that crime. Sounds more like Mistress Talon. She’s always bathing in blood for her rituals.
Mab- Waste of good food if you ask me.

Mab and Clyde. I know your break up was less than pleasant for each of you. What would it take to get back together in more than a working relationship? I will understand if the question is too personal.
LikeLike
Mab- We’re too busy for that kind of stuff. I’m enjoying all the stealing that I can do with my powers.
Clyde- I’m trying to figure out this leader of a new species thing. Besides, Mab would have to settle down a bit for a relationship. That isn’t happening.
Mab- Definitely not.

I’ve done character interviews, but never questions from the public. What an amazing idea!
I wonder, Clyde, how did you discover you were a new kind of vampire? What were your immediate feelings when you found you can go out in the sun?
LikeLike
Clyde- I should probably explain more of the situation. Windemere had something called the Great Cataclysm where everything went haywire for a few minutes. I was being executed by a bunch of sun priests at the time and their spells were changed by the event. I was also buried with the rest of the city temple for 50 years until Mab finally came to get him out. It was maybe an hour or two after returning that she noticed I had a heartbeat. We ignored it and figured the thing would be quiet eventually, but that never happened.
Mab- To be honest, we stumbled onto all the Dawn Fang powers. The sunlight too. Keep in mind that old-world vampires can still go into the sun. It only drains them of their strength and powers, which is why they wear night cloaks. You want to finish up this answer?
Clyde- Discovering that I was immune to the sun was another accident. There was some initial fear until I realized what was going on. After that, I had to focus on the trouble around me. By the time I had a moment to think, I was more curious than anything else.

Clyde and Mab, what was the greatest heist you ever did with your gang?
LikeLike
Mab- I don’t really know what we could consider the greatest. The gang didn’t do a lot of group heists either. Many of the members did their own thing and we shared the spoils. So, you didn’t have the blackmailers and mercenaries team up with the burglars and pickpockets that often. We shared information and acted as backup, but that was really it.
Clyde- Only times we worked as a full unit was when we were hired by Xavier to plague an enemy of his. We’d blackmail, rob, and destroy the target for the promise of being able to keep everything. None of those were really great. I can say what the most impactful one was. That has to be when I tried to steal that Duragian artifact.
Mab- The one that resulted in you getting executed, buried alive, and returning as a Dawn Fang?
Clyde- It does kind of overshadow everything else we did up to that point.
