War of Nytefall is very much an action adventure, so the sex side of vampires doesn’t really come out too often. The Dawn Fangs will demonstrate having urges from time to time, but much of it really centers around Chastity. I might have it come out more in future volumes, but it isn’t a priority now.
To be honest, I never fully understood why vampires get associated with sex so often. I mean, they’re dead and that’s kind of gross. Not to mention, it’s strange that the equipment can work unless the vampire is able to use blood to get the job done. Then again, they do feel pain, so pleasure could be in there too. Either way, I don’t see why anybody would want to or why these creatures would care. It isn’t like they can reproduce and it always seems they enjoy feeding more than sex. At the very least, they’d enjoy it more with each other. There’s just so many questions that never seem to get answered because vampires are so intertwined with carnal desires.
The truth is that vampires began with a connection to sexuality, but Bram Stoker’s Dracula reduced this because of the times. Sexuality wasn’t discussed in public and the non-sexual vampire remained for a while. They still seduced, but the actual act didn’t return to their mythos for a while. Apparently, it isn’t too surprising since the whole fangs penetrating flesh is seen as an analogy for intercourse. Yet, people still argue over vampires and sex all the time. Some think that’s where they should be, others think it’s unseemly for fiction, and others fall in the middle. Personally, this makes me wonder if vampires originally stemmed from the succubus and incubus myths. Those are the demons who seduce men and women respectively.
So, what do you think about vampires and sex? Is this a part that’s essential or do you think it’s unnecessary in their stories?
Interesting, Adnama and Alex, who are my Vigilante couple, both of who are vampires enjoy the intimacy, I think it is personal preference.

I think I can get the vampires having sex with each other. Immortality is forever, so there’s a bond between such creatures. I think it’s more when mortals are practically throwing themselves at the undead that I get a little confused. Just kind of want someone on the sideline going ‘You know that guy’s dead, right?’

That’s magical raising of the dead. Sleeping with the dead is necrophilia and it’s really sad that I know the difference.

I haven’t read many books about vampires, Charles. The few that I have, including Salem’s Lot by Stephen King, didn’t link the vampires and sex.

I think a lot of old lore has the sex and seduction thing like with Dracula. The 80’s and 90’s had much more of the monstrous type of vampires.

I don’t know but would think that if biting someone on the neck for food is erotic then there would be no need for sex.
LikeLike
The neck is an erogenous zone for some people, but the fangs should be an issue. Some legends have it that the bite creates a euphoria too. Then again, that’s not always done in vampire trysts. Many just have sex without the feeding or the feeding comes afterwards.

I can’t help thinking of the last book in the Twilight series. Yes. I went there.

I was thinking of that and True Blood. Both are rather sex heavy.

I never saw the show, but I read three of the books by Charlaine Harris.

How were those? Sounds like the two stories went away from each other.

I have to say it’s a topic that has always puzzled me. I’m glad someone finally brought it up. We seem to be attracted to the unknown or the mysterious and vampires seem to have both. It’s as if we get bored with our everyday routine of life with another human. Who knows, maybe it all comes down to a little variety. We’re kind of sick in a sexy sort of way, aren’t we. 🙂

Staving off boredom and being attracted to the mysterious are probably factors. It’s a bizarre variation of the ‘meet a dark and mysterious stranger’ in a way. Still seems odd when you factor in that vampires eat humans.

Very interesting post… but I think you reversed succubus and incubus… or I read it backwards.

Nope. You’re right. I’ll fix that. Not sure how I got so mixed up.

In my opinion, it’s all about manipulating your readers. In horror, having a character who is vulnerable is useful. There aren’t many more times when a person is more vulnerable. The sex act is usually a private thing, so it plays into the isolation issue too. Alone, naked, vulnerable both emotionally and physically, with a super predator equals good fiction if you do it right. Those femoral arteries are pretty handy to all the naughty bits too.

I get that for slashers like ‘Friday the 13th’ and the vampires who are really out for blood. I guess my confusion stems more from the surge of romantic vampires. It seems to take the sexual/lustful aspect of the lore and humanize it. The originals had a sense that sex was used almost like a hunting tactic. Now, it’s closer to the characters only wanting to get laid and finding the vampires worth pursuing for a relationship.

A certain amount of skill is required to really sell it as titillating and scary at the same time. Maybe you see this as low hanging fruit and can look for an improvement on the system. I wouldn’t be above trying it, but I’d want one of my romance author friends to take a serious look at it. Romantic moments, even erotic moments, aren’t my forte.

Does seem like romance authors hit this note more often than horror. My guess is that it deals with genre focus. One wants titillate and the other scare. Stepping outside of the mechanics, I wonder why vampires get pegged as sexy do often.

I swear it has to do with that reader manipulation. Probably harder to pick up chicks if you smell like a bloated cow and decomposition.

Doesn’t every story depend on reader manipulation? We’re always trying to pull emotions out of our audience to get them invested. One could even say that’s art in general. People don’t pay attention to the creations that fail to stir something.

Yeah, but it’s likely easier if the romance angle is involved. The smelly, dead guy, makes it harder to get that roller coaster started.

Vampires never seem to smell unless they’re the monstrous, ugly version. Maybe they have a really good perfume system. Anyway, it could also be the target audience. That romance angle might not work for everyone.

Each author should hold to their own vision. Maybe a smelly lone super predator would work on skid row, and be terrifying. Romance readers insist upon that angle. Others like the whole gothic horror style, and want something more classic. You stuck to your version. It’s my airplane book, and I’m about six chapters in.

Hope you’re enjoying it. I do like the gothic style, but I’ll admit that I lean more towards the modern vampire of the 80’s and 90’s. More nightclub owner than aristocrat.

We’ll be home Monday, if the standby flights work well. Might dedicate some reading time there. Otherwise, it’s when I have a moment or two. It’s on my phone this time, so I get hour lunches next week only. There are some others I’m looking forward to, but they’re pre-order right now, so I can’t actually start them yet.

You always get those memes, would you sleep with a vampire or a werewolf? My gut reaction is “NO.” They both want to eat you.
But then the person who asked will pout, so if forced to choose, I always pick the one that has a pulse.

Vampires and sex? Hell yeah. Look at the practical side in the summer – no sweaty salty necks if you’re with a vampire, and their skin is cool. Sure, they’re vampires but if you can get past that it might just work. And if you are a vampire you have a lot of time on your hands so why not?

True. Although, I don’t see summer being a favorite season for the sun-sensitive types of vampires.

I guess it depends how far you go back- the original mythology? Not very sexual. But add a novel and then Hollywood? Of course there’s going to be sex in it. They put sex in everything (not complaining)

It might also depend on which mythology. I’ve read that the Incubus and Succubus have been connected to vampire lore at times.

Such an interesting train of thought to read.. being younger I was always into the twilight series and yes,Edward and his shiny chest turned me on! Now i really wonder why? Their forbiddennes, the fact that they might love you so much as to not kill you when that is their inherent nature. In the last blog ive just posted i discussed how i naturally feel arousal by being wanted over people who shouldn’t be with me..maybe vampires tie into this line of thought..

I grew up in the 80’s, so we had ‘The Lost Boys’, Dracula, Buffy, Blade, and Monster Squad. Not sure if we can count the Count from Sesame Street. It’s funny how the other kinds were fairly monstrous and still kept their romance side while Twilight went softer. Interesting theory on why vampires might be appealing. It definitely ties into a forbidden danger.
