Thanks to All

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

This is the last month where I’ll be promoting a new Legends of Windemere book since the long journey comes to an end.  I began outlining in 1998, writing in 1999, and publishing in 2013.  Now, it comes to the grand battle and finale in 2017.  The long list of people that I should thank includes:

  • Family
  • Co-workers from various jobs
  • Fellow RPG gamers
  • Best friends
  • Old friends
  • New friends
  • Author friends
  • Blogging friends
  • Teachers
  • Mentors
  • Rivals
  • Enemies
  • People on TV
  • People in Movies
  • Cartoon characters
  • Random people I’ve talked to
  • Ancient civilizations that gave me inspiration
  • Voices in my head

It seems like a strange list of categories, but I don’t think I’d have gotten this far without all of these groups.  I’ve pushed myself out of so many emotions that I can’t even tell you which one prompted which section.  There were times I fought hard to spite those who told me to stop and other times I was driven by my own desire.  One of the key points was to always have fun and I’m thankful for all the people who helped me enjoy this path.  It would have really sucked if it turned into a ‘job’ in the way that I just went through the motions.

The last page of Warlord of the Forgotten Age will be a ‘thanks’ section.  I went through it several times to make sure I got everyone at least in some broad categories considering doing names could be a book in itself.  I haven’t really seen this done in other series, so I’m unsure if this is a good idea.  All I know is that I feel like I’d be a jerk if I didn’t end with some message.

So . . . What do you think about thanking people at the end of a series?  How would you go about doing it?

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

  3. I’ve seen it done, but only as an individual or two. Kind of a “thanks Mom” type deal.

Good idea, Charles. It would be like the Acknowledgment section of a book, only with no specific names. Christine

  6. I like the idea. Not sure how people who fit in broad groups would see themselves as thanked but I really can’t suggest another way. As you suggest naming names would be a tome.

I’d do a general thanks to everyone who has stuck by you throughout the years. I’d do a big thanks to the readers for without them, you wouldn’t have a series to begin with. 🙂

  8. I’ve seen books that thank people, both by name and broad categories. I haven’t seen many lately though, it seems like it’s fallen out of fashion, which is a shame.
