The Future of Ichabod Brooks

So, now I have to think about the future.  Not only for the next series since we’re a month or two away from the hopeful release of Legends of Windemere: Path of the Traitors.  That series will come to an end, so I don’t have to worry about that.  I do have to think about Ichabod Brooks.

I have about 10-12 other short stories that didn’t get written for The Life & Times of Ichabod Brooks.  People voted on what sounded interesting and I took the top 11.  It didn’t mean the other ones were getting tossed aside though.  I want to write them at some point.  Maybe not next year, but eventually.  2018 still feels like it’s going to be an epic mess to me since I’ll have a new series to start up and it sounds like the natives consider the end of Legends of Windemere to be a sign that I should retire.  So, I definitely have time for this.

Did I have something in mind?  Yes, and I was curious what people thought of these future collections:

  1. Another collection of Ichabod Brooks stories.
  2. A collection of Mrs. Brooks stories.  I’ll have introduced her at the end of the previous collection.
  3. A collection of Ichabod Brooks stories that all connect to a plot against his family and officially ends his tales.
  4. A collection of Morgan stories with an Ichabod Brooks cameo.  Not certain about this one because I’m still considering giving her the lead in the trilogy/one-shot/collection that focuses on a band of cursed monster hunters.

So, what do people think?  Should I even keep going with Ichabod?  I figure I can only do so many Pulp-like adventures before he gets repetitive, which is why a second collection should probably lead to a change.  Putting him in a larger work feels odd too.  Kind of like to give him some closure instead of doing one book and letting him wave in the wind.  So, feedback will always be welcomed in this arena.

    If you feel you have the stories inside you for it, do them all. If you want my personal opinion though, I think you should do the collection that ends his tale at least, and it might be nice to let Mrs. Brooks tell her stories too.

    Like everyone else, I’m going with 1 and 2. But I agree with Victoria that if you have the stories, why not do them all.

    Yes, keep Ichabod. I like the idea of Mrs. Brooks. Not so keen on the family thing ending the series but you know best.

    I like your ideas, it’s a nice progression of events. Just remember that Sherlock Holmes had lots of stories and people are still writing them today, even though most of the modern stories are nowhere near as good as the original ones.
    Write as many stories as you can, put the spares to the side and release them when you need something to publish and don’t have anything else quite ready.
    No matter what you do, I’m sure you’ll do justice to Ichabod Brooks.

      Fully agree about the modern ones not being up to snuff. I should look at how many Conan had since pulp fiction was the inspiration. Although, Sherlock is more popular. Maybe Ichabod needs a British accent.

      The spares being put to the side is a good plan. I’ll always have stuff to write and publish, but I can let his stuff build up until I have enough for a collection. Ichabod won’t be a yearly like Bedlam and Legends, so I’ve got time.

        It sounds like you have a good plan. It never hurts to have something to fall back on just in case you get stuck or need a break from what you’re working on.

        A British accent is a good idea, old chap, pip now.
        (Yes, most of my British slang comes from the old movie Royal Wedding.)

        The break is a good idea that I’ve used many times. Having a smaller project gives me a break from the big one. Then I can just go into editing when the side one is done.

        Yeah. She does more curse words and the those with an Unamerican ‘u’ in them. She’s a cunning warlord after all. Old chap would just be odd.

    I have not read the stories yet Charles but it is on my buying list for the next Amazon run. I have put in the blogger daily and I am already featuring the latest review from John Howell in tomorrow’s cafe update. I have however noticed that my short story collections do well. I think partly because readers have busy lives and spend 10 to 15 minutes reading at the end of the day. They love a complete story. It is a bonus to have the same character throughout the collection as they come to love them. I think 1 and 2 would be your best option and by the time you write about Mrs Brooks they will have already embraced her.

    I’m really curious about the Mrs. She sounds like she’s a force to be reckoned with. But I’d also like to see more Ichabod. Would it be possible to have a book that has a combo of her stories and his? I want my cake and to eat it, too. Sorry.
