So, the family went to the zoo on Saturday. Then another zoo on Sunday. There were baby animals and a lot of fun. Never been to the Prospect Zoo (Saturday) before and Bronx Zoo (Sunday) is a lifelong favorite. Starting with the Prospect Zoo and then the Bronx Zoo, but I’m showing something from the first trip at the end with a small story.

With a Little Story
I like these pics for an extra reason. Prior to my son sitting there and waving to the baboon, there were a bunch of kids harassing it. It was sitting there chewing on a large stick, but these kids would bang the glass, shout, and run at the baboon. The goal was to get the poor thing to snarl and bang back at the glass. Only one parent stepped in to stop their child while the rest weren’t doing anything. Well, they were laughing and taking pictures while I was explaining to my son that he shouldn’t be mean to animals. In that way when you say it in the area and just loud enough for certain people to hear and give you the stink-eye. By the way, adults were doing this to the baby gorilla you see above and I even saw one kid full on bunch the tank of a viper because he wanted it to move.
Anyway, it was interesting to see that after all of that, my son just walked over and quietly sat down ‘next’ to the baboon. They just looked at each other and waved and there wasn’t any problem. The baboon yawned, but that was it. Honestly, I am occasionally left thinking that some humans shouldn’t be allowed near other animals after I leave a zoo because of the treatment. Is it really so hard to teach your kids not to bang on the glass, scream at animals, or throw stuff into the enclosure? Guess it is since I’ve seen plenty of adults do this. Just once, I’d love to see somebody bang on a window and it break. Just enough that the Silverback Gorilla can get an arm through to bop the jackass on the head.
You probably already know that there are five gorilla toddlers in the Bronx Zoo’s award-winning Congo Gorilla Forest exhibit – all under two-and-a-half years old. Moms Layla, Kumi, and Suki gave birth to Kamara, Mokonzi and Kidogo Njemba in 2015. Julia and Tuti gave birth to Mjukuu and Lincoln in 2014 😃
The baboons don’t appear to have names – a case of Species Discrimination? 😳

We’ve met the toddlers many times over the last 2 years. Always nice to see them playing around. The baboons were at a different zoo and there was a baby. Mommy kept the little guy by the tail and away from the window-banging horde. I don’t think baboons like being given names. Just doesn’t seem like their thing.

Probably not, Charles – it would be a bit too humanising for them 😄😄😄

Disney already tried it and it didn’t stick. Though I think the ones at the Bronx Zoo might have had names posted at one point.

I like the family photo. You don’t post a lot of those. Zoos are a favorite of mine, and you got to see some cool stuff. Not all of them can house animals the size of bison. I like the small cat too. Everyone seems to ignore them to the point that folks don’t realize they exist in the wild. The story at the end was wonderful too.

We don’t take many of them and it’s hard to get the wife to agree to a posting. The zoos have a great variety, but they no longer have cheetahs. Those were great when I was a kid, but I think they moved the breeding program to another location. We’re going to another zoo tomorrow where you get to feed the giraffe and they supposedly got bobcats for this summer.

Thanks. Especially since I went in for an important doctor visit today. Is it possible for something to go smoothly, but still be a bummer?

I’m with you on people. Some should be kept away from animals for sure.

Think the worst was a kid who flat out punched a display window to get a reaction from a viper. My son got scared and moved away because he thought the snake would be mad and strike. The other kid got closer. Survival instincts in action.

Too bad there is not a way to break out of the cage and bite the parents.

The main problem is that the snake would be destroyed for attacking.

Loving the pics, and definitely agree about how people behave around the zoo…*may have also grinned quite a bit at the gorilla and baboon pics* Either way, sounds like you guys had fun. ^_^

It’s been a fun break so far. Going to a farm/petting zoo tomorrow to feed a giraffe. The animals just keep coming.

It looks like you had a lot of fun this past weekend!
I hate to say it, but with how some people act, they should be the ones on display in a zoo.

I was thinking the same thing. Although, I don’t know if they’d be interesting. Only so many jackass displays you can have.

At least there’s hope for some children… Those with parents like you who actually teach them how to behave correctly. I saw something similar when I was on my keeper for the day experience back at the end of March. Told my hubby the people were lucky my keeper for the day status didn’t give me the authority to kick them out, because if it did I would have done just that.
Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed – apart from having to witness that behaviour.

It gets pretty disgusting at times. I saw them fishing garbage out of the river otter display too. Thankfully, it seems most people aren’t jerks. You just tend to notice them more often.

Looks fun. I remember those happy days at the zoo or wildlife parks with my kids. Now, they are all teenagers, and nothing is ever right with whatever we attempt to do. I’ve still got the memories and the pics though. 🙂

Dreading that moment, but I never tired of zoos. That was always a winner. At a petting zoo today where he gets to feed a giraffe.

Some people should be put IN the cages.

Eh, I’d find them boring. I say just scare them with a tiger and ban for life.
