I’m getting to the end of Book 14, which will be Legends of Windemere: Path of the Traitors. Might finish it today, but that announcement will have to wait until tomorrow with the rest of my weekly report. Instead, I find myself in a quandary, which is a word that I’m not sure I’m using or spelling correctly. Next week, I’ll be going over the outline for the final book and redoing it to close up all the subplots and make sense. Here is the problem:
I’m not sure about the final title. I forgot the original one from over a decade ago, but I’ve had it as:
Destiny’s End
Fate of the Champions
Age of Heroes
Currently I have it as Legends of Windemere: The Forgotten Baron. Is this good enough? Guess it feels weird naming the final book after the bad guy, but it is where he is the main threat instead of an agent, temple, or other obstacle. Maybe it just feels weak to me. The Timeless Baron? Baron Kernaghan? The Forgotten Warlord? Revival of the Lost Baron?
Anything clicking or suggestions? Really scratching my head here.
I prefer Fate of Champions, it sounds like it ties everything together.

It does. Though, I got a lot of complaints about it being weak and ‘fluffy’ in comparison to the suffering that occurs. Guess some people want the title to showcase the tone.

The Forgotten Baron sounds more like the middle of a series than the end, to me. I would suggest working with Warlord in the title, and then a final strong word to reflect the content. The Warlord’s Revenge? or maybe The Hidden Warlord?

I guess I was going for Baron because that’s his real title. It does sound weak for an ending. He’s a villain who was erased from history and mortal memory by the gods, but ‘forgotten’ just doesn’t seem right any more.
Frustrating part is that I had a great one a year ago, but the paper I wrote it down on disappeared.

Ever get the sense that Return, Rise, and Revenge are used too often in titles?

I guess the Windemere Karaoke Lounge would also be too fluffy then.

And false advertising. This is really driving me nuts because I need to stay away from the cliche stuff.

Words like Epitaph and Eulogy don’t get used very often, but they are powerful. I’ve been holding them back for the right tale myself. An Epitaph for a Baron has a ring to it. You could go the other way with a hero emerging, like From Champion to Hero or something like that.

Think my only concern with Epitaph and Eulogy is that it means the connected character is definitely going to die. Also sounds too nice to connect to the Baron who is the main bad guy. (Actually, I just checked my notes and ‘Epitaph’ is a possible finale title for my vampire series.)
Have to think about the hero one. They’ve already emerged, which is why I once had ‘Age of Heroes’. People thought it was lame and told nothing of the events.

They’re good words, and I’ve been holding them back for a perfect story. Hope you find something perfect.

I hope so too. My mind keeps going back to the Baron. All of the other titles reference a person, place, or thing that is story central. Hero, Rainbow Tower, Gypsies, etc. Feel like I should do that here too.

I like that, you should keep that flow going. I’ll think about it, and if something comes to mind I’ll let you know.

Playing with the words right now. Have ‘Baron/Warlord of the Forgotten Kingdom/Age/Realm’.

I agree with Dean. Either that or Destiny’s End. Both sound final.

I’m starting to see a flaw in this post. People are picking off the previously rejected list.

I like the sound of ‘Legends of Windemere: Destiny’s End’ as the title of a final book in a series Charles 😃

I’m going to point out the biggest flaw in that one. To the people who I tested it on years ago, it sounded like I was talking about a stripper. 🙂

I like ‘Warlord of the Forgotten Realm’ 👍

It does have a nice ring to it. That or ‘Forgotten Age’. Both sound good to me, but going Warlord instead of Baron is growing on me.

Forgotten Age suggests time travel somehow 🤔

Not too far off in a way. The Baron was sealed by the gods and erased from history, so nobody remembers him. His return will restore him to history and everyone will abruptly remember his existence.

The Forgotten Warlord?

Similar to ‘The Forgotten Baron’, but maybe. It’s weird that ‘forgotten’ with a person sounds like they were misplaced, but ‘forgotten’ with a time or place has more mystery.

The Baron that Time Forgot?
The Mists of Time?
The Baron?
Warlord?

Think I’ve heard that second one before. Love how if I add ‘The Forgotten Warlord’ we get a title at 5,4,3,2,1. 🙂 Not good that I’m being entertained by every distraction.

The Forgotten Baron sounds OK, but maybe isn’t strong enough for a title for the final book in the series. I like the idea of your continuing the theme of having the main threat in the title, so putting “Baron” in there somewhere is important. But I think you need something in the title that will make it clear this is the final book, without giving away too much about what will happen in the end. Something like “The Baron’s Fate” or “Destiny Of The Baron” or “The Baron’s Last Chance” – only better, because those aren’t all that good, but I’m tired and can’t think of a great title to suggest.

Yeah. That makes it sound like he’s the protagonist too. That’s one the challenges. I have to reference him with finality and not make him sound like the hero.

Since you mentioned that at least one hero dies, what about ‘The last deaths ‘ or ‘Who dies today?’ or ‘For Those Whom the Baron Kills’. (or would it be who instead of whom?)
Maybe not the best suggestions, but those are my ideas.

I was thinking of going for that point, but I couldn’t get it to work. ‘Ending of a Hero’ was the best I could come up with.

Calling on some of your original titles, perhaps something like Fates In The Balance, which implies that everything is up for grabs and you don’t know who will win or lose.

True. I’ll put it on the possibility list. Thanks.
