There really isn’t anything deep about this. Each of us has a favored snack or food that we gravitate toward without thinking about it. They’re that treat we love that brings mental and emotional comfort. A food that we never seem to get tired of.
Most people here are probably expecting me to mention pizza, but the truth is that you can’t have a box of pizza next to you while writing. It’s greasy, makes a mess, and you’re really going to pay for eating the entire thing. That’s not a good author comfort food in my mind. That’s just personal preference.
My favorite snack when writing are Twizzlers. Only problem is that they never last long around me. I’ve devoured a family pack in a day and a half without even realizing it. That was on a weekend too, so it never made it to the writing time. I just like being able to grab a handful of straws, pop the end of one in my mouth, and eat away while my hands are working on something. Yes, I’ve also used a Twizzler as a straw with minor success because it breaks apart in soda. That and I eat it quickly.
So, do you have a comfort food when writing?
Ooh I love Twizzlers too – and in the world of candy, there are a whole lot of things worse (unless, of course, you eat the whole bag!). But I am an M&M fanatic – melts in your mouth, not in your hands – no mess.

At Greek weddings, you give away sweets – traditionally a sugary confection known as koufeta. Instead, we gave away M&Ms. You wouldn’t believe how big a hit that was. The wedding video has caught a cousin of mine with six boxes in her hands, sneaking away. The cameraman asked her where she was going. The cousin blushed and twisted her body away to hide the boxes from the camera, mumbling something along the lines of, “just taking these to my friends” before rushing off. 😀

M&Ms are so delicious. There’s a new kind I found earlier in the year that’s Birthday Cake flavored. It was so beautiful. I’m curious. How common are M&Ms there and are there different flavors? I ask because I’ve how there are KitKat flavors found only in foreign countries, so I wonder if other candies have that.

You can find M&Ms on every street corner. I remember they have different colours, but don’t remember the flavours – or if a Birthday Cake one has reached the Aegean yet. As for Kit Kat, I only know the traditional one. Again, though, I should check.
The only problem with a wife that bakes some great sweets is that one falls behind on modern trends like these… 😀

I think that’s a perfect excuse though. Homemade is always better than store bought.
Now I’m curious about what kind of candy is around the Aegean. It feels like the foreign stuff never makes it to the stores around here, but that does make sense. Some things can’t always cross over.

The most traditional ones usually involve honey glazed nuts. You know, baklava, florentines etc.

Haven’t had baklava in a long time. Son has a peanut and tree nut allergy, so that tends to limit a few things.

I’ll bet! I love it when you see on baklava boxes the notice: “Warning, may contain nuts”. I’m always like, “What do you mean, may??” 😀

Isn’t great when they’re vague.

I wouldn’t know anything about eating an entire family pack of Twizzlers. Nope. No idea how a 34-year-old author could possibly do that and not feel crushing guilt the next day . . . I’m trying to behave with the 5 pound container I got over the weekend.
Do you have a favorite M&M flavor? I mentioned Birthday Cake to Nicholas. Have you tried this one yet?

I like the original milk chocolate ones.

Coffee. Just coffee. And the odd baked potato… no prep, you see… just wash and go 😉

Does the potato have to look odd or is it odd that it shows up in the diet? 😀

It’s funny how coffee powers so many authors. I’m not able to do that because it puts me to sleep.

I have a selection of hard candies. They are cherry, strawberry, lemon, line, caramel, wintergreen, mint, grape flavored and individually wrapped. I like them since they too can be put in the mouth with involving hands. They are sometimes a bear to unwrap so it keep consumption down to a dull roar.

Hard candies are classic. I forgot that brand that had a picture of the fruit or berry on the front. Last longer than Twizzlers too.

Snackage when writing can be a deadly combination for me because when I am writing, I don’t realize how much I am eating. It’s amazing how hungry you get when writing. When I was writing the restaurant scene in Princess of the Light, I was famished. 😀 As for snackage, I love Twizzlers and chocolate in many forms along with pop. But usually, I am a good girl and drink water. 🙂 Have to maintain my girlish figure. 😀

Good point on writing eating scenes. That seems to make me hungry and my characters are snacking so often. One of them always seems to have a drink or piece of food when they’re discussing events.
I’ve been trying for years to cut down my soda intake. I found seltzer works as a good habit breaker since it has the carbonation and none of the caffeine. Can’t say I’m maintaining my girlish figure though. Pizza is too yummy.

I only drink diet and my favorite is Coke Zero. Pop is my one vice and I don’t plan on cutting back. I need the caffeine. Hey, feel free to send me all your pop and I’ll take care of it for you.
Ha ha ha! I love pizza too. I walk over 20 miles a week so I can eat chocolate, pizza and whatever else I’m craving. Maybe we should start a Writers Snacking Support Group?!? 😉

I do go for Coke or Sprite Zero when I indulge. Took a while to get off the caffeine need though. Think the only thing we have left here is a bottle of Diet Caffeine Free Coke from 2012.
I’m very impressed with the 20 miles a week. I bike 10 miles a day on a stationary bike, but it doesn’t seem to give me the ability to eat whatever I’m craving. Sign me up for that group. 🙂

Cherry Twizzlers are my favorite. I have a peanut M&M habit that jumps up on occasion. Mostly though, I’m a coffee and cigarettes addict.

Coffee and chocolate! Unless I have craving for something weird. I remember one past NaNo I fried loads of courgettes and eggplants and ate those while writing…but then I had to clean the keyboard!

I think you can get that stuff from Costco. Though to be fair, there’s a lot of empty space in those boxes. It’s like they’re made bigger to justify the price, but they’re filled with the same amount of food as the regular sized one. Come to think of it, you don’t see candy bars at movie theaters.
