Seven Sin Rondelets

Homunculi from Fullmetal Alchemist

This set of 8 short poems stem from a conversation from years back.  It was a philosophical discussion that went all over the place and eventually landed on the concept of sin.  We discussed how every person is slightly sinful at some point in their lives and many people have their preferred sin.  We’re going solely by the vague definition of the word.  For example, pride can be boasting after winning a video game and lust can be the simple passing thought of ‘I want her/him’.  This is going into a bigger discussion than I had intended and it’s one that works better in person.  Here is the structure of  Rondelet for those wondering:

Line 1 :: A—four syllables
Line 2 :: b—eight syllables
Line 3 :: A—repeat of line one
Line 4 :: a—eight syllables
Line 5 :: b—eight syllables
Line 6 :: b—eight syllables
Line 7 :: A—repeat of line one

Greed

Is Greed your sin?

Do you always want to own more?

Is Greed your sin?

A strong thirst for materials.

Wanting more than an even share.

Refusing to give any scraps.

Is Greed your sin?

Envy

Are you Envy?

Do you get jealous all the time?

Are you Envy?

You want what everyone holds dear.

The wins of others cause you pain.

Even if you were not involved.

Are you Envy?

Wrath

Is Wrath your sin?

Do you rage with every slip?

Is Wrath your sin?

Anger is your natural phase.

Without it you are lost and scared.

Looking for a reason to snap.

Is Wrath your sin?

Gluttony

Live Gluttony?

Do you devour all you see?

Live Gluttony?

You indulge until you are sick.

You never think that you should stop.

The world is your endless buffet.

Live Gluttony?

Sloth

Is Sloth your sin?

Do you shy away from all work?

Is Sloth your sin?

You sit on your ass and waste air.

Only watching others work hard.

No spark or urge within your frame.

Is Sloth your sin?

Lust

Is Lust your sin?

Do you crave the touch of bare flesh?

Is Lust your sin?

You stare at others with hot thoughts.

Judging everyone by body

And how you dream they are in bed.

Is Lust your sin?

Pride

Is Pride your sin?

Do you believe yourself a god?

Is Pride your sin?
You will never make a mistake.

Failure is the fault of others.

You are too perfect to take blame.

Is Pride your sin?

Seven Tastes of Sin

Are you all sins?

Do you have evil in your veins?

Are you all sins?

You live for every dark act.

Never caring what others think.

You only wish to feel a rush.

Are you all sins?

    Wow. Ambitious! With your rondeletes you make me feel so lazy. But I enjoyed reading them!

    And I meant to add “so lazy as a writer.” I was almost too lazy to type that.
